Sixty years ago today, our family took over the Gasthof Kohlern, reopening it after a period of renovation – and in doing so, began a new chapter in a long and meaningful history. 🥂

The building itself has seen many transformations: in 1899 it was designated as a mountain inn, having originally been built as a country house in 1870, before being lovingly converted into a guesthouse by Mr Baumgartner.

The 29th of June has long held special significance in Kohlern. On St Peter and Paul’s Day in 1908, the Colle cable car was inaugurated – the world’s first cabin mountain cable car. Since then, the date has traditionally marked the unofficial start of the summer season.

A day rich in meaning for us and our house – though this year with a small wink: as the cable car is, as everyone knows, taking a break until early August, the summer retreat begins in the classic way... just with a little more patience on the way up. 😉
