The beach at Feniglia at sunset, looking north along the stretch of tombolo toward the Argentario peninsula. There's ample paid parking on the Ansedonia side and a few lovely cafes and restaurants at the beginning part of the beach. La Capannuccia has great pasta, and Il Tempio is just too cool. And then it's just miles of wonderful sand, water, dunes, and forest 😀.

Walk through the pine forest path to the first beach turn off at the first kilometer, called Varco 1, and the beach here is yours. Take an umbrella because there's no rental place, and bring all the snacks and drinks you need if you don't want to have to walk back along the beach to a cafe.

Piazza Belvedere in Capalbio is a lovely place to pause before you turn into the main gates of the old center. The view is lovely, there's two excellent restaurants to choose from with tables right on the square, the coolest bar in town is just across the road, and the fabulous Nana Fountain statue by Niki Saint Phalle sits proudly in the middle, just a taste of the wonders of the nearby Tarot Garden.

If you turn inside, there's a short walk up to the second gate through the inner fortress walls, which features the original medieval wooden doors open on each side of the entrance. Via Circonvallazione, the modern ring road, circles around the outer perimeter of the fortress. It takes about 15 minutes walk around the whole thing, and Capalbio's main parking place for visitors is on the back side.

One of the most beautiful things about the beaches in the region is how extensive the free beaches are. There has been a lot of recent discussion and active campaigns protesting how much of Italy's beautiful coastline is reserved for paying customers at commercial establishments, but the beaches of Capalbio are unique, we think, with miles of free and unrestricted sandy coastline.

Yes there are small sections of reserved beach here, but they're run by friendly staff that run wonderful bars and amenities that are open to everyone, and who clean and maintain large stretches of free beach as well. You might want to hire an umbrella, sure, but are not required to do so if you have your own, and the bar and showers and toilets that they run for everyone is a short walk away!

There are a number of lovely, atmospheric bars and cafes within the Capalbio city walls in the old town, and a couple on the edge of the outer city walls looking down to the sea. There's also Il Frantoio below the walls on the Piazza della Providenza, which also has an excellent, but expensive, restaurant.

The coolest place to hang out, though, is La Bottega del F***e, which is on Piazza Belvedere; the main square at the entrance to the old town. It's built right into the fortress wall to the right of the gate. It's got a relaxed, retro vibe, has the best gelato in Capalbio, and is run by a certified mixologist, so the cocktails are fantastic! 😎

The cafe and bar restaurant at Ultima Spiaggia in Chiarone, just five minutes drive south towards Rome. It's one of our favorite beaches on the coast, with Penultima, the endlessly long free beach, stretching out beside it. The sand is golden, the water lovely, and there's showers, bathrooms, ample parking, and umbrella hire if you need it. Prices are very reasonable, and the vibe is relaxed.

Weekends are packed, though, with lots of people driving up from Rome, so maybe look for somewhere less crowded, or just walk a bit further away 😂. Carmen Bay at Macchiatonda, Frigidaire at La Torba, and Bau Beach at Ansedonia are also lovely. Don't get too close to the headland at Ansedonia, though, because we've found the water is not as clean, but everywhere else is perfect!

On the summit of the rocky promontory above the fancy villas of Ansedonia is the archaeological park of Cosa, founded by the Romans in 273 BC on the site of an ancient Etruscan settlement. It was built to ensure the Roman's control of the region, to protect the nearby port of Orbetello, the coast, and inland, and was linked to Rome by road which served the large farms and granaries in the region.

Cosa itself, though, had an unfortunate history. Built with large imposing city walls, temples, temples, bathhouses, and many buildings, it was devastated by Hannibal during the Second Punic War, was rebuilt, sacked and abandoned again during the civil wars of the Roman republic, rebuilt and repopulated a third time by Augustus after an earthquake, and finally abandoned after a plague of mice and malaria. By AD 417 Cosa was deserted and in ruins.

The Feniglia nature reserve has been a protected woodland area since 1971, and is one of the prettiest experiences in the region. Situated on the southern tombola sandbar that runs from the Ansedonia mainland all the way across to Argentario, it's a Mediterranean coastal forest of pine, oak, and ash trees, and is a haven for many species of birds and animals including deer, foxes, badgers, woodpeckers, blackbirds, herons, and cuckoos.

There are beautiful pathways running the entire length, bisected by smaller paths to the beach a kilometer apart. At the southern edge is the archaeological site of an ancient pre-Etruscan Villanovan settlement, and it is also where Caravaggio died in 1610, among the pines and marshes, of malaria and starvation while hiding from the authorities.

Sunset on the beach at Chiarone at the end of another very hot day during the June heatwave 🥵, one of our favorite beaches on the coast south of Argentario. There are two great establishments on the beach here just 10 minutes from Capalbio, Ultima Spiaggia and La Dogana, and Ultima's free beach, Penultima, is here as well.

There are cafes and restaurants, showers, bathrooms, umbrella and sunbed hire, and lots of cheap parking right behind the dunes. Doggos are welcome, and there's a dog beach at the end of Penultima too 🐶. We're here often; there's room to find your own space, the sand is lovely, and the water is fresh and clear. Small children need to be kept an eye on though, because it gets deep quite quickly when you wade out.

Casa Terra is one of our two unique Tuscan apartments in Capalbio, both with private gardens and parking, free internet, and wide open patios looking out over the nature reserve down to the sea. They are terrific bases for exploring the Maremma region of southern Tuscany; quiet, homely, and fully equipped with everything you'll need for your stay.

The apartment has old wooden beams, exposed rock face walls, and terracotta floors, and is full of paintings and prints, little antiques, pottery, and bronze objects collected by our father, an art dealer. It's fully booked in July and August, but available for that perfect late summer early autumn escape to explore the region in September.

A pathway from one of the many private villas in Ansedonia looking down towards the Feniglia tombola that stretches across to the Argentario peninsula. Modern Ansedonia itself is not really a town, more an exclusive community of gated villas and hidden complexes owned by celebrities, politicians, and rich businessmen. There's nothing to do here except drive through it out of curiosity on your way to the beach.

The tower overlooking the sea is the Torre della Tagliata. It was built in the 16th century as a defensive fortification for the State of the Presidi, later converted into a private home, and was used frequently by the composer Giacomo Puccini and where he worked on many of his famous operas and wrote Turandot. You can't visit it, but there it is.
