Gammazita room 💛The legend of Gammazita tells of a girl from Catania named Gammazita who was beautiful and highly esteemed. A French soldier fell in love with her, but his courtship was rejected by the young woman who was already engaged. On her wedding day, when Gamazita went as usual to fetch water, the soldiers attacked her so violently that the girl found herself with nowhere to go, preferring to throw herself into a nearby well rather than succumb to misfortune there hospitality.

Liotru Room 💙. One of the most iconic legends of Catania concerns the huge lava stone statue of an elephant located in Piazza Duomo. This statue, known as “Liotru” in Catania dialect, is said to have the power to protect the city from natural disasters. Legend has it that if the Liotru ever left Catania, the city would be destined for a great catastrophe.

From Feb. 3 to 5, the city dedicates a great feast to the St. Agatha, a mixture of faith and folklore.

St. Agatha (Catania, 229/235-Catania Feb. 5, 251) was, according to Catholic tradition, a young Christian woman who lived in the 3rd century and was martyred during the persecutions under Emperor Decius by Quinziano, Praetor of Catania, who condemned her to torture and imprisonment.

There are several miraculous events attributable to St. Agatha and related to the protection of the city of Catania:
-The eruption of Mount Etna in 252, which was stopped, according to tradition, by St. Agatha’s veil carried in procession by the faithful near the lava flow
-The earthquake and tidal wave of 1169, which ceased only after the invocation of the Saint
-In 1743, tradition tells us that the Saint prevented the spread of the plague in the city of Catanai.
The main place of worship is the Cathedral of St. Agatha, where her relics rest.
