What does The Independent say about us?

Yesterday, a family from London arrived at Villa Santa Margherita — parents, children and two weeks at the villa.

At check-in, we asked our usual question:

“How did you find us?”

The father simply held out his phone.

On the screen was an article from The Independent. Villa Santa Margherita had been selected as one of just 12 hotels in Sicily, with a special mention as Best for families.

Almost a year and a half later, a few paragraphs had turned into plane tickets, children’s backpacks and fourteen nights with us.

So we became curious about what everyone else thought.

A name older than the villa itself.

Villa Santa Margherita was built in the 19th century.

But the name Santa Margherita belongs to this land much earlier.

This countryside holds traces of people who lived here as far back as the 6th–5th centuries BC.

Centuries passed.
Kingdoms appeared and disappeared.
The landscape changed, but the name remained.

Later, an early Christian site appeared here: Grotta di Santa Margherita.

For generations, pilgrims came to this small grotto hidden in the countryside. Its ancient frescoes still preserve the quiet memory of devotion, time and faith.

It was the grotto that gave its name to this land.

And, many centuries later, to Villa Santa Margherita.

Today, the old path is still here.

You can step out of the villa, walk among the olive trees, and reach the grotto in just a few minutes.

No ticket.
No crowd.
No performance.

Just stone, silence, countryside and the rare feeling that history has not been arranged for you — it has simply continued.

The 2026 season is in full swing at Villa Santa Margherita.

The pool is open.
The gardens are green.
The rooms are ready.
And summer in Sicily has settled into its most beautiful rhythm.

Villa Santa Margherita is not a large hotel.

It is a historic Sicilian estate with only five rooms, surrounded by 11 hectares of olive groves, gardens and countryside, on the edge of a protected UNESCO nature area.

The villa dates back to the 19th century and was once connected to the estate of Bishop Rosso — a place where olive oil, wine, land and hospitality were part of everyday life.

That spirit has not disappeared.

It is still in the old stone walls.
In the shade of the olive trees.
In the taste of our St. Margherita DOP BIO olive oil.
In the quiet after sunset.

Only five rooms.
No crowds.
No hotel rhythm.

Just Sicily, space and time.

Days here move gently.

A swim in the large panoramic pool.

🌿 Carved into this stone olive press is the date: 1815.

Twelve years ago, during the restoration of Villa Santa Margherita, we discovered an old stone wheel among the ruins of the estate.

Engraved on it was a date: 1815.

Italy did not yet exist as a unified country.

The automobile was still almost a century away.

Yet olives were already being grown here, and olive oil was already being produced from this land.

Today, the stone press stands at the entrance to Villa Santa Margherita, welcoming our guests and serving as a symbol of the estate.

Around it, the ancient olive groves still grow.

Some of the trees are more than 300 years old.

This land once formed part of the estate of Bishop Rosso.

Much has changed.

But not everything.

Every week, we ship St. Margherita DOP BIO to our customers across Europe.

Olive oil from those very groves.

From that very land.
