Thi is what happened in the summer of 1159 when Frederick the 1-st of Swabia (also known as Barbarossa, or Redbeard) arrived in the city, accompanied by his young bride, Beatrix of Burgundy and the Duke of Saxony, Henry the Lion.
They arrived at the and of the siege of Milan, which has just concluded with the capitulation of the Lombard town. Historians acknowledge the importance of Barbarossa in the rebirth of Como and consider the celebration to be a form of thanks, from the captains, the bishop and the entire population.
