⛪ Saint Archangel Michael — Esterzili

Among the places worth discovering during a stay at the Nuragic Temple is the church of Saint Archangel Michael , the patron saint of Esterzili and one of the village’s most important historic landmarks.

Dating back to the 15th century, the church is a beautiful example of Gothic-Aragonese architecture, preserving an important part of Sardinia’s medieval heritage.

The devotion to Saint Michael the Archangel extends far beyond Sardinia. For centuries, his cult has been deeply rooted across different parts of Europe and the Christian world, from Italy and France to Cornwall and Ireland.

Traditionally depicted as the celestial warrior defeating the dragon, Saint Michael has long symbolised protection, strength, courage and guardianship. Many sanctuaries dedicated to him were built in elevated or remote places, often overlooking mountains, valleys or the sea.

Here in the mountains of Esterzili, his presence is also deeply connected to the memory and identity of the local community.

When staying at the Nuragic Temple, we always encourage our guests to take time to explore the village itself — its churches, narrow streets, traditions and historic places that tell the story of generations who have lived in this land.

There is something special about this time of year in Sardinia.

The light becomes softer, the evenings cooler, and the house begins to change with the season: candles, warm food, autumn colours, and the quiet feeling of returning inward.

In the Sardinian language, September is called Cabudanni or Capudanni — literally “the beginning of the year.” In the traditional Sardinian world, this period marked a new cycle: the end of summer, the return of the rains, new agricultural rhythms, and the beginning of another season of life.

At the Nuragic Temple in Esterzili, we love allowing the house to follow these natural cycles too.

A warm kitchen, a pot slowly cooking, the scent of herbs and wood, long evenings around the table, walks through the mountains as the landscape begins to change.

Autumn here is not simply a season to watch.

It is a season to live slowly.

🍁 Come and experience autumn in the heart of Sardinia.
Stay at the Nuragic Temple, discover Esterzili and the Barbagia di Seulo, and enjoy a different Sardinia — quieter, wilder, and deeply connected to the land.

Welcome, Capudanni.
Welcome to a new cycle.

Among the highlands of Esterzili, overlooking the Flumendosa valley, the landscape still preserves the traces of a territory deeply inhabited and lived during the Nuragic age.

At Taccu ’e Linu, the remains of three Giants’ Tombs can still be found, located close to one another and oriented towards the south-east. They were not isolated monuments: traces of huts and the presence of a nuraghe in the surrounding area suggest a wider communal landscape — a place shaped by everyday life, memory, and a deep relationship with the ancestors.

Today, what remains are mostly stones, fragments, and lines that could easily disappear into the landscape to an untrained eye.

And yet, seen from above, those ancient forms begin to speak again.

Red as presence.
Red as blood.
Red as life continuing to move through the same land once walked by communities thousands of years ago.

The Giants’ Tombs were not simply places where the dead were laid to rest. They were collective monuments, places where the community of the living gathered before the space of the ancestors.

For this reason, when I walk through these places, I try not to see them only as “archaeological ruins.”

They are traces of relationship.

Between the living and the dead.
Between community and territory.
Between stone, landscape, and memory.

Perhaps our role today is not always to fill these places with new interpretations, but to learn how to see them again.

Because even when only a few stones remain, a place can still hold a story.

Taccu ’e Linu, Esterzili.
The memory has not disappeared.
It is still held within the landscape.

When we began giving new life to the Nuragic Temple, we didn’t want to turn every room into something completely new and perfect. Instead, we wanted to listen to what the house had already been and preserve some of its traces.

This bathroom still carries its 1970s soul: its shapes, its colors, and some of the original elements that we chose to recover and blend with our own style — natural materials, wood, ceramics, textiles, and details that now reflect the spirit of the Nuragic Temple.
And interestingly, it is one of the spaces our guests love and remember the most. 🤎

Perhaps because nothing here tries to imitate the past or create an artificial aesthetic. Instead, different layers of time live together, allowing the history of the house to remain visible.

For us, restoration also means this: not erasing the past, but finding a way for it to continue having a place in the present.

At 1,212 metres above sea level, the summit of Monte Santa Vittoria rises above Esterzili and the surrounding landscape.

From here, the view opens across mountains, valleys and the vast interior of Sardinia, offering a different sense of scale, silence and connection with the land.

Monte Santa Vittoria is much more than a beautiful destination. Its landscape is deeply intertwined with the history and ancient memory of this territory, where archaeology, water, nature and sacred places have coexisted for thousands of years.
Reaching the summit means leaving the village below and slowly entering a wider landscape — one shaped by wind, rock, changing light and open horizons.

For guests staying at Nuragic Temple, Monte Santa Vittoria is one of the places we most encourage them to discover: not simply to take a photograph, but to spend time there, walk, observe and experience the mountain at its own rhythm.

A place where Sardinia feels immense.

At Nuragic Temple, we love to let the house move with the rhythm of the seasons.

For us, decorating is not simply about changing colours or adding small details. It is a way of welcoming each new cycle, both inside and outside the house, and of creating an atmosphere that feels connected to the land around us.

As autumn approaches, pumpkins, warm earthy tones, dried plants and seasonal elements begin to appear around the Temple, transforming the spaces little by little.

It is our way of saying: welcome, Autumn.

A season of slowing down, gathering, returning inward and enjoying the warmth of a home while the landscape outside begins to change.

At Nuragic Temple, every season brings a different way of experiencing the house — and we love allowing our guests to feel that transition too.
Can't wait to starting again!
