"In the evening, the sheep come down", Italy 🐑🐑🐑

This plein air watercolour painting was painted close to my accommodation in the Marches region of Italy, close to the border with Umbria. I set out to capture the evening light and, at the same time, to tell a story of how the sheep come into that part of the pasture to graze at that time of day. Every evening I watched them come down to the area of yellowed grass between the trees, the bells that some of them were wearing round their necks ringing. Beyond that, are the rolling hills and farms typical of the Italian countryside.

"Return to Collamato", Italy"

Collamato is a hill-top village in the Marches region of Italy. This small, plein air work created outside the old gate leading to the impressive central square. It was painted as a pendant to my original painting done three years ago on my first visit to Collamato – “A Small Corner of Collamato” - hence the title. The two paintings compliment one another and may be hung as a pair. I kind of fell in love with this place with its old natural stone buildings and the special Italian light.

"Midday shadows in Collamato ", Italy

On my frequent visits to the beautiful, unspoilt region of the Marches in Italy, close to the border with Umbria, I revisited the hilltop village of Collamato many times. This is the real old Italy, not the Italy which has adapted to accommodate thousands of tourists. Here, you can hear the dry leaves move across the ground blown by the dry wind which gusts through the old streets. The only sound is perhaps a cat and an occasional barking dog and, of course, the old church bell. I was attracted to this particular scene of back gardens and the pompousness of the lion and vases on the wall of one of the otherwise modest houses.
