Le Marche’s wildest and most beautiful landscapes are in the Monti Sibillini National Park, spilling across the border into Umbria. This mountain range is one of the highest parts of the Apennines and it is home to boar, wolves and bears. At the heart of this wilderness is the picturesque town of Castelluccio, a remote hilltop village which is often cut off in winter and famed for its colourful blossoms in early summer. These mountains are popular throughout the year and a great centre for walking and outdoor sports.

Macerata is a lively university town with a pale brick centre, dating back to the 15th and 18th centuries. The university itself was founded in 1290 and today the city’s students ensure that it remains animated, with its many bars and event venues throughout the winding city. The city is perhaps most well known for its summer opera festival in the distinctive outdoor theatre, known as the Sferisterio. This interesting structure was originally built between 1819 and 1829 as a sports stadium. Built into the city walls, it has a semi-elliptical shape and excellent acoustics allowing opera to be performed here unamplified. The nearby ruins of the Roman Helvia Ricina were significantly plundered to build this medieval town, which was declared a city in 1320.

What started out as an endeavour to get some holiday sun, turned into the creation of a little spot of paradise and a business venture.
An old run-down farmhouse was discovered in the then quite unheard of region of ‘Le Marche’ in Italy; David and Lynette Hartley snapped it up and started the process of renovating the property. The bathroom had to be moved upstairs, the old animal trough needed to find a new home and the process quickly snowballed.
Neither speaking the language nor having travelled extensively in Italy was by any means a deterrent however. Before long, they had created a large open plan living and dining room, four bedrooms, a pool and an amphitheatre, all set among the beautiful existing olive groves, overlooking the rolling hills of central east Italy.
David’s patience and meticulous thinking along with Lynette’s creativity and practical approach enabled them to create something unique in the area.
The house was affectionately named by the people of Massa Fermana village as ‘La Casa Rosa’ or ‘The Pink House’. Within no time David and Lynette were being greeted by hardware shop owner Mario, local baker Giovanna, local restaurateurs Franco and Gabriella and Nicola and Laura, local barber and beautician, like long lost friends. Friendships that have remained for over 15 years.
More than just a house, Casa Rosa is an idyllic home with a welcoming and communal atmosphere. David and Lynette’s caring and generous nature permeate throughout the space. Both being very hospitable they brought up their three children in the UK in a house full of extended family and friends: you always lay an extra place at the table for the unexpected guest.
Casa Rosa takes this approach even further – built with attention to detail, creativity and love - the house really is a home to enjoy for anyone that wishes to stay.
