Why is September one of the best months to visit Florence?

Here are a few reasons:

The days are warm and pleasant, but never too hot.

You’ll find plenty of markets in Florence’s beautiful squares: antique markets in Piazza Savonarola and Piazza Indipendenza, artisanal market at Convitto della Calza, independent designers in Piazza dei Ciompi, plants and flowers at Manifattura Tabacchi, and a traditional bread market in Piazza Santissima Annunziata.

September is also packed with events all around the city.

Here are just a few:

Firenze Jazz Festival – enjoy live music in unusual and unexpected locations around Florence.

Rificolona – a beloved Florentine tradition, with children parading through the streets carrying colorful paper lanterns.

Artigianato e Palazzo at Giardino Corsini – a rare opportunity to visit a beautiful private garden while discovering artisans, workshops and food.

Corri la Vita – a major charity run supporting the fight against breast cancer.

And don’t forget: September is grape harvest season in Tuscany!
Discover the many wine festivals in the hills around Florence. In the Chianti area, for example, you can enjoy Tastingreve in Greve in Chianti, the Festa dell’Uva in Impruneta, famous for its spectacular parade floats, and Vino al Vino in Panzano in Chianti.

☀️August can be very hot in Florence, but if you’ve chosen to spend a few days here, don’t worry—we have plenty of tips to help you enjoy the city.

Start your day early, when the streets are quieter and temperatures are pleasant. During the hottest hours, relax in one of our cool, air-conditioned apartments before heading out again in the evening.

At sunset, enjoy an aperitivo with a view. Take bus 12 to Piazzale Michelangelo for Florence’s iconic skyline, or bus 7 to Fiesole and discover the new overlooking an authentic Roman Theatre from the 1st century BC.

As the sun goes down, stroll through the historic center. Summer evenings are magical, with street musicians often performing in the city’s beautiful squares.

If you’d like to stay cool during the day, here are a few ideas:
☀️Visit a museum. Florence has much more to offer than the Uffizi and the Accademia. If you’ve already seen the classics, discover one of its hidden gems. On Sunday, August 2, Palazzo Davanzati, a beautifully preserved medieval tower house, offers free admission.
☀️See an exhibition. Don’t miss the acclaimed Rothko exhibition , open for just a few more days.
☀️Go rafting on the Arno. Paddle beneath Ponte Vecchio for one of Florence’s most refreshing experiences
☀️Go shopping. Via Tornabuoni, Via Calzaiuoli, Borgo San Jacopo, and Via della Vigna Nuova are all nearby and perfect for shopping—especially during the summer sales.
🍷Take a Chianti day trip. Many local tours combine the Tuscan countryside with wine tastings.
☀️Spend the day by the pool. Florence has several excellent pools and wellness centers. Just ask us for our recommendations.
☀️Watch a movie. In Piazza Strozzi, a former cinema now home to a beautiful bookstore often screens films in their original language.

And if you’re looking for something refreshing while exploring the city, grab an Aperol Spritz from one of Florence’s historic wine windows or treat yourself to what we think is the best granita in town

🍦 I Gelati del Bondi – on Via Nazionale, a short walk from Santa Maria Novella Station.
🍦 Sbrino – on Via dei Serragli, in the charming Oltrarno district.
🍦 Gelateria della Passera – on Via Toscanella, just around the corner from Piazza della Passera.
🍦 Cantina del Gelato – on Via de’ Bardi, right across Ponte Vecchio with beautiful views of the Arno.

Florence has officially entered summer mode.
As the temperatures rise, the city slows down a little.

On the hottest days, take a break from the heat and enjoy the comfort of your apartment, keeping cool during the afternoon hours.

Then, do as the locals do: head out in the evening, when Florence comes alive again. Stroll through the historic streets, enjoy an outdoor dinner, and soak up the atmosphere of the city after sunset.

You can also retreat to a museum, enjoy an ice cream, or treat yourself to a refreshing mandarin granita to cool down ( ).

Or, if you’re feeling particularly brave, join the runners taking part in the famous Notturna di San Giovanni, the night-time race that winds through the heart of Florence’s historic centre every June. A true local tradition—and a challenge even on a warm summer evening.
