La Firenze che conosciamo oggi risale al 59 a.C. quando Giulio Cesare fondò la città e la trasformò in un insediamento per soldati romani veterani. L'architettura della città assomigliava più a un campo militare che a una città reale, ma questo cambiò nel corso degli anni. La città iniziò a fiorire all'inizio del secondo millennio e nel 1100 dC Firenze era una potente città-stato. Durante quest'epoca, a Firenze fu costruita una delle cattedrali più iconiche d'Europa.

The city of Florence that we know today dates back to 59 B.C. when Julius Caesar founded the city and turned it into a settlement for veteran Roman soldiers. The city’s architecture resembled more a military camp than an actual city but this sure changed throughout the years. The city started flourishing at the beginning of the second millennium and by 1,100 AD, Florence was a powerful commune (city-state). During this era, one of Europe’s most iconic cathedrals was built in Florence.

LA FONTANA DELLE BOCCACCE - PARCO DELLE CASCINE

Nel 1785 il Granduca Pietro Leopoldo Asburgo Lorena incaricò l'architetto Giuseppe Manetti (1761 - 1817) di rinnovare il parco delle Cascine e costruire alcuni edifici, in quanto la sua famiglia intendeva utilizzarlo per organizzare feste. La Fontana delle Boccacce, così chiamata per i mascheroni da cui usciva l'acqua, fu costruita nel Prato del Quercione (la quercia che dava il nome al prato, non c'è più, si è seccata). Al momento della costruzione le mucche pascolavano ancora libere nel prato e utilizzavano il più elegante abbeveratoio che una mucca avesse mai visto. Infatti il suo nome originario era Abbeveratoio del Quercione.

In 1785 the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo Habsburg Lorraine commissioned the architect Giuseppe Manetti (1761 - 1817) to renovate the Cascine park and build some buildings, as the Lorraine family intended to use it to organize parties and celebrations. The Fontana delle Boccacce, so called for the masks from which the water came out, was built in the Prato del Quercione (the oak, "quercia", which gave the meadow its name, is no longer there, it has dried up). At the time the fountain was built, cows were still grazing freely in the meadow and thus found themselves using the most elegant drinking trough a cow could ever see. In fact, its original name was Abbeveratoio del Quercione (big oak drinking trough).
