On Sunday, January 18 at 11 am, Via Il Prato 48 will host a special opening and guided visit of the Brindellone, to mark the restoration work on the door of its storage building. The Brindellone is the ceremonial cart at the heart of Florence’s historic Scoppio del Carro (Explosion of the Cart) tradition.
The event offers a rare chance to admire Europe’s tallest door still in use for civilian buildings, as well as one of Florence’s most enduring symbols, and to explore the origins of a centuries-old ritual.
Officially known as the Carro del Fuoco (Cart of Fire), the Brindellone is used each year during the Scoppio del Carro, held on Easter morning in Piazza del Duomo. The tradition dates back to at least the Middle Ages and is associated with Pazzino de’ Pazzi, who is said to have returned from the First Crusade with stones believed to be sacred, used to light the Easter fire.
Drawn by white oxen to the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the cart is ignited during the ceremony by the colombina, a symbolic rocket launched from the high altar. Today, the Brindellone remains one of Florence’s oldest civic and religious emblems and a cornerstone of the city’s historical identity.
For most of the year, the Brindellone is housed in the municipal building on Via Il Prato, leaving its storage site only for the Easter ceremony, when it is taken to Piazza del Duomo. The building is traditionally used for the cart’s conservation and maintenance and, on special occasions, opened to the public.
Admission is free. Guided visits in English, French and Spanish are available from 3 pm to 5 pm. Visits in Italian do not require booking. To reserve a visit in a language other than Italian, write to:
