Fantastic creatures, ancient manuscripts and one of Florence’s most fascinating libraries. 📚
The Museo di San Marco is currently hosting ‘La Biblioteca svelata: il bestiario fantastico’ (The Library Unveiled: The Fantastic Bestiary), the first exhibition-catalogue dedicated to the illuminated manuscripts housed in the splendid 15th-century library designed by Michelozzo at the behest of Cosimo de’ Medici, considered to be Europe’s first public library.
The exhibition brings together a selection of manuscripts from the 13th to the 16th centuries and takes visitors on a journey of discovery through real animals, hybrid creatures and fantastical figures. Deer, phoenixes, dragons, unicorns, snakes, harpies and many other creatures, each linked to a particular symbolic meaning.
Have you visited the exhibition yet? You still have until 30 November.
