The Romanelli Gallery was established in San Frediano partly out of practical need: space.
The former church, with its high ceilings, made it possible to create large sculptures and work the materials more easily. Around it, the neighborhood was full of artisans—working wood, iron, marble, and ceramics—making the Oltrarno one of Florence’s most important centers for craftsmanship.
Since 1829, the Romanelli Gallery has remained here, and today it continues to thrive through experiences, lessons, and public events.

La Galleria Romanelli nasce a San Frediano anche per una necessità pratica: lo spazio.
L’ex chiesa, con i suoi soffitti alti, permetteva di realizzare sculture di grandi dimensioni e di lavorare meglio i materiali. Intorno, un quartiere pieno di artigiani, tra legno, ferro, marmo e ceramica, che rendeva l’Oltrarno uno dei centri più importanti del lavoro artigianale fiorentino.
Dal 1829 la Galleria Romanelli è ancora qui e oggi continua a vivere anche attraverso esperienze, lezioni ed eventi aperti al pubblico.

Nell’Oltrarno ci si muove anche così: camminando senza una meta precisa e lasciandosi guidare dalle vetrine, dalle insegne, dalle piccole botteghe che si incontrano lungo il percorso.
Entrare all’Ippogrifo significa rallentare. Il legno, la carta, il lavoro manuale e il ritmo della stampa creano un’atmosfera diversa, più raccolta, lontana dal rumore della città.

L’Ippogrifo is an art print studio founded in the Oltrarno in 1977, and ever since, it has carried forward a craft centered on the uniqueness of each piece.
Here, every print is different: the technique itself makes it impossible to create identical copies, and that’s exactly what defines the value of their work.
An approach that stays true to the workshop’s original vision—creating one-of-a-kind pieces, in contrast to mass production.

L’Ippogrifo è una stamperia d’arte nata nell’Oltrarno nel 1977 e da allora porta avanti una lavorazione che mette al centro l’unicità del pezzo.
Qui ogni stampa è diversa dall’altra: la tecnica stessa rende impossibile ottenere copie identiche, ed è proprio questo uno degli aspetti che definisce il valore del loro lavoro.
Un approccio che resta fedele all’idea originaria della bottega: produrre oggetti unici, in contrasto con la produzione in serie.

That’s where the idea came from: opening the workshop to guided visits and workshops, to offer a closer look at the craft in action.

Oggetti grezzi, lavorazioni a foglia oro e argento, laccature e decorazioni come il giglio fiorentino, tra le più richieste perché legate alla città.
Chi entra rimane colpito dalla varietà di oggetti e materiali.
Da qui nasce anche l’idea di aprire la bottega a visite guidate e workshop, per mostrare da vicino come si lavora.
