1. Tracey Emin. Sex and Solitude at Palazzo Strozzi (March 16-July 20) is the first major institutional exhibition in Italy dedicated to the celebrated contemporary British artist, encompassing paintings, drawings, film, photography, embroidery, appliqué, sculptures and neon installations.
2. The Supernovecento program at Museo Novecento features the all-female Messaggere exhibition, investigating the relationship between art and spirituality; a retrospective on textile artist Marion Baruch titled Un passo avanti tanti dietro; and a three-site exhibition by Thomas J. Price, including a large-scale figurative sculpture in piazza della Signoria.
3. Spring is all about flowers. The wisteria in the Bardini Gardens and the irises and roses in the dedicated gardens by piazzale Michelangelo all get our vote!
4. On that note, the Firenze Flower Show brings rare and unusual plants to the stunning Giardino Corsini on April 5-6 for a market-exhibition featuring some of the best buds in the country.
5. Michelangelo Buonarroti turns 550 today! The Accademia Gallery celebrates the maestro with a stacked calendar of events throughout the season and beyond, including talks, activities and concerts. The Bargello Museum and various other venues also mark the occasion, with themed tours taking a deep dive into his oeuvre.
6. Never seen the exploding cart on Easter Sunday? Head to piazza Duomo for the world’s most unusual firework display, known as Scoppio del Carro, on April 20.
7. International handicraft exhibition MIDA returns to Florence’s Fortezza da Basso from April 25 to May 1, blending cultures, generations and diverse traditions.
