The Oltrarno Splendid lives up to its name, with 14 eclectic and individually-designed rooms, minutes from the Ponte Vecchio and historic centre of Florence.

The work of Francesco Maestrelli, Matteo and Marco Perduca and Betty Soldi, the minds behind two additional hotels in the Renaissance capital, each room is a mix of periods, pieces and styles, with commissioned artworks to boot.

Occupying the upper floors of an 18th century palazzo below the mirror-clad rooftop aerie that was once the studio of Flower Power artist and textile designer Susan Nevelson, a soignée selection of contemporary furnishings – think resin desktops by Gaetano Pesce and period 1950’s lamps – vie with original features, including rediscovered and carefully refreshed frescoes, and fading but fabulous 200 year-old Toile de Jouy wallpaper for attention. But it is the views across the rooftops from the in-room bathtubs that will sweep even the most world-weary off their feet.

‘Housed within a 16th-century palazzo, Oltrarno Splendid is a bold reimagining of the Florentine bed-and-breakfast, where frescoed ceilings meet eclectic, mid-century design. Each of its 14 rooms is uniquely curated with a mix of velvet textures, vintage finds, and contemporary art (all carefully chosen by owner and Florentine local Matteo Perduca) that reflects the creative pulse of the Oltrarno district.

Have breakfast in the Wes Anderson-esque bar—once the former servants’ quarters—before exploring the nearby artisan workshops and hidden boutiques or crossing over Ponte Vecchio to the city center.’

Did you know the writer of ‘Pinocchio’ came from Florence?! Most of us grew up with Disney’s version of the cheerful little wooden puppet Pinocchio. But the original story, written in 1883 by Carlo Collodi, was far darker, filled with lessons about disobedience, greed, perils and temptations - he meets characters who teach him about life, and learns goodness before he achieves his heart’s desire to become a real boy. The growing nose with each lie symbolizes the consequences of dishonesty, showing that lying leads to visible and negative effects. Appointed by the Blue Fairy to guide Pinocchio, Jiminy Cricket serves as a “conscience” to differentiate right from wrong. The 1940 Academy Award winning song ‘When You Wish Upon A Star’ from the film would go on to become the signature theme of the Walt Disney Company. It serves as an anthem for believing that dreams can come true regardless of who you are, promising that “fate steps in and sees you through”. May you have inspirational dreams from this art on our walls.

‘Some of the rooms still keep the original 19th-century style with toile de Jouy wallpaper, grotesque frescoes, plaster walls and frescoed ceilings. Most boast clawfoot tubs and views of iconic Florentine landmarks. All have a sense of individuality, culture, and style. Particularly special is the King Deluxe room in what was previously the palazzo’s attic. For many years, this space housed the creative studio of Susan Nevelson, married to the son of the more famous Louise Nevelson. Susan was the muse and designer for the fashion icon Kenn Scott, very well known in the roaring 80’s for his strong colors. You can easily feel that the room, with its exposed rafters and original textured walls, has a colorful history itself! The room’s large glass windows offer stunning, sweeping views of Florence that feature Palazzo Vecchio, the Duomo, and Palazzo Pitti. A neon sign with the writing “heaven” rests above the bed, and we couldn’t agree more.’ and the Oltrarno neighbourhood surrounding us that we love

“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye” from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s The Little Prince. A philosophical reminder to focus on empathy, connection, and emotional depth - to fly high, even inside.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence is a 13th-century masterpiece with the world’s largest masonry dome, built over 140 years. Designed by Brunelleschi without traditional scaffolding, its iconic red-tiled dome, white, green, and red marble façade, and 15th-century construction represent the pinnacle of Renaissance engineering.
The name ‘Santa Maria del Fiore’ means Saint Maria of the Flower, but this name didn’t come about because of the flower at the bottom of the dome. Instead the cathedral was named after the lily flower, which is the symbol of the city.⚜️
* Brunelleschi’s dome is the largest brick dome ever constructed, built without wooden centering/scaffolding.
* It took over 140 years to complete, with the first stone laid in 1296 and the dome finished in the 15th century.
* It was built on the site of the older, smaller 7th-century church of Santa Reparata, with remains still visible in the crypt.
* Iconic Facade: The exterior is covered in polychrome marble panels in green (Prato), white (Carrara), and red (Maremma).
* Secret Frescoes: The dome features enormous frescoes of the Last Judgment, painted by Vasari and Zuccari.
* Upon completion, it was the largest church in Europe and is currently the third-largest in the world

A boutique B&B in Florence, Oltrarno Splendid offers a side to the city away from the tourists. This 18th-century palazzo is in right by the River Arno, in the artisan-favoured, artistic namesake neighbourhood. The dream design team - who also brought you AdAstra and SoprArno - added the fruits of their frequent antique-market trawls to the faded wallpaper and existing frescoes, with bath tubs in some of the bedrooms. It’s a more local part of town, but the Ponte Vecchio and all of fabled Firenze’s Renaissance-era heros are mere moments away.
