If I had to give another name to September I would call it “Vendemmia” (Harvest). When the summer ends throughout Italy, the tractors are put back into motion and people pull their ugliest clothes out of the closet and prepare to have stained hands.

When we still had the vines, my grandmother used to retrieve items from her wardrobe like red rubber boots, a below-the-knee skirt with little flowers on it and an apron of an indeterminate colour, possibly once blue. The only tool necessary for this ancient work is the so-called “cesoire” (gardener’s scissors) always in your pocket and also, for some experts, the switch knife.
