🌹 “A red rose on Saint Mark’s Day – a timeless Venetian symbol of love.”
On April 25th, Venice celebrates Saint Mark, its patron saint. On this day, locals honor a centuries-old tradition: gifting a red rose — the “Festa del Bòcolo” — as a gesture of deep love and devotion.
This tradition is rooted in a romantic Venetian legend from the 9th century.
Maria, daughter of the Doge of Venice, fell in love with Tancredi, a young man of humble origins. Their love was forbidden, so she urged him to prove his worth through bravery in battle.
Tancredi fought with honor, but was fatally wounded in a rose garden. With his last breath, he gave his friend Orlando a rosebud stained with his blood, asking him to deliver it to Maria as his final message of love.
On April 25th, after receiving the rose, Maria was found lifeless, holding that very rose close to her heart.
