Match Report Dunbar AAM1 v Coogee B
Sunday 22nd April @ The Reg
Off the back of a challenging draw against Mascot last week it was important the Royal Oak sponsored AA1s got back to winning ways to keep pace with the early league leaders in what will be a tight league.
The coaches pre game message was to focus on defensive solidity and a clean sheet and to be ruthless with the chances we create. That went out the window on 10 minutes. Coogee broke down the right and crossed in low across the 6 yard box where their striker scuffed a shot back across goal and in to the bottom corner. 1-0 Coogee.
One thing that can be said about this AA1 squad, they do not let their heads drop. 10 mins later we were level. Some nice build up play down the left resulted in an infield pass to Penglase, whose lose touch found its way to Cox 30 yards out. One touch out of his feet and he let fire with a 30 yard screamer in the top corner, dipping at the last minute. Deservedly back level.
Coogee continued to threaten down the wings with their pace causing some issues, but with 15 mins of the half to go a long ball from Le Chat and confusion amongst the Coogee defence found Moore with space to run in to one on one. Moore kept a cool head and slotted in to the far corner to make it 2-1.
The half time interval saw a tactical change from the AA1s, switching to a 442 to minimise the impact from the Coogee wings, much to the delight of Butters, he loves a 442.
Coogee pressed hard for the first 10 mins of the second half but Dunbar defended resolutely with Schieder and Butters forming a formidable partnership at the heart of the defence bolstered by Megalos and Taylor on either side. The 1's started finding more space in midfield with Cox and Holmes starting to take control and finding their passing vision. Taylor and Moore were finding more and more space to run in to down the wings with Penglase and Frame working tirelessly up top to minimise Coogee time and space on the ball.
Some fresh legs were added in the shape of Nesbitt at full back and Shirra in the middle.
The Dunbar effort and determination soon paid off when Moore grabbed his second of the game, quickly followed by goal-a-game-Holmes to put Dunbar up 4-1 and kill off any fight in the Coogee ranks.
Ekren was soon introduced to the game seeking his first competitive goal for Dunbar at CF. It took him 5 mins to find the net latching on to a Holmes through ball and slotting coolly to get his season off and running. Ekren then added his second and Dunbars 6th of the game shortly after to make it appear a comfortable win. However, it was far from comfortable, Coogee provided a stern test but just ran out of steam at the end.
Great character from the boys to come back from a goal down and play at high tempo for the full 90 mins.
Well done and back on track in what will be a very competitive league… and off we went to the Royal Oak Hotel Double Bay to celebrate!
Next up, the preliminary round in the FNSW State Cup against Putney Rangers…
