In Liguria, vineyards cling to near-vertical terraces carved into rock above the sea. The wind is relentless. The slopes give nothing easily. At harvest, the work is still done by hand, basket by basket, because machines cannot reach where these vines grow.

And still, every season, they climb.

What comes from that effort is Vermentino, a white wine shaped by struggle, sea air, and stone. The marine breeze leaves a saline character in the glass, a sapidity that stays with you long after the bottle is gone.

Most people will only ever notice the price.

They won’t see what it takes to make this wine.

If you’re staying in La Spezia tomorrow, save your evening for Portovenere.

On August 17th, the village celebrates the Madonna Bianca, one of the most beautiful traditions of the Ligurian summer.

For one night, Portovenere feels completely different: candles, lanterns and torches light up the old village, while boats gather beneath San Pietro.

It’s more than a beautiful event. It’s one of those rare moments that lets you experience a place through its history, its faith and its relationship with the sea.

That’s exactly the kind of experience I love sharing with our Casa di May guests — the kind you remember long after the trip is over.

Would you rather see the Madonna Bianca from the village or from the sea?

I didn’t grow up with the Italian Sunday.

As a foreigner, I wasn’t used to a colazione that could simply be coffee and something sweet. 😅

But living here changed that.

I’ve grown to love those slow Sunday mornings in La Spezia, the quiet streets, taking your time, and knowing that Sunday is meant to be shared with family.

Then comes pranzo.

And afterwards, the little pasticcini or as my father-in-law always called them, “le paste”

They take me back to the Sundays I spent with my father-in-law, Trino.

Those Sundays won’t come back.

Trino is no longer with us.

But the tradition remains.

And maybe that’s what I love most about living in Italy: some of the moments that become our most precious memories aren’t the ones we planned.

They’re the ones we simply allowed ourselves to live.

That’s the kind of experience I hope our guests at Casa di May take home from La Spezia.

Not another list of places they checked off.

But a Sunday morning they remember. 🤍

🏡 Casa di May
Feel at Home in Italy.

This little Hoya has lived in Casa di May Acquasanta for a couple of years.
Today, for the very first time, it bloomed.

It reminded me that the things we care for with patience, love and consistency eventually flourish.

That’s exactly how we care for every corner of Casa di May.

Because hospitality isn’t just about a place…

It’s about helping people feel at home.

One of my favorite parts of hosting at Casa di May is seeing guests discover a side of La Spezia they weren’t expecting.

Many arrive thinking of Cinque Terre or the famous attractions nearby.

Then something interesting happens.

They spend a little more time in the city, wander through its streets, stop for a coffee, and begin noticing the stories hidden in plain sight.

That’s when La Spezia starts to feel less like a stopover and more like a destination.

And honestly, those are some of my favorite moments to share with our guests.

✨ Feel at Home in Italy

Most visitors arrive in La Spezia with one goal: Cinque Terre.

And I understand why.

But over the years, I’ve watched many travelers fall in love with something they weren’t expecting: La Spezia itself.

The morning markets.
The historic center.
The waterfront at sunset.
The family-owned restaurants.
And the simple pleasure of slowing down and living like a local for a few days.

That’s exactly the experience we try to create at Casa di May.

Not just a place to stay, but a place to feel at home while exploring this beautiful corner of Liguria.

The real luxury of traveling isn't checking off a list; it’s having the time to do absolutely nothing. ☕️🇮🇹
Most people use La Spezia just as a quick gateway to the Cinque Terre, rushing from one train to the next. But the real magic happens when you slow down.
A quiet morning with fresh espresso, listening to the city wake up before the crowds arrive, that is where the best memories are made.
We designed our vacation homes precisely for those slow, unhurried moments.

Most people know Porto Venere for its colorful waterfront, historic church, and breathtaking views of the Gulf of Poets.

On June 13, 2026, there’s another reason to visit.

📍Pansa e Stacca

A food festival that transforms the village into an open-air tasting experience, celebrating the flavors, traditions, and convivial spirit that make Liguria so special.

Expect local specialties, regional wines, and the chance to wander through Porto Venere one bite at a time.

If you’re looking for experiences that go beyond the typical tourist checklist, this is one worth adding to your calendar.

✨ Definitely making its way onto my Casa di May recommendations.

Would you plan a day around food in Porto Venere?

More than the food or wine selection in ___, I loved having a great alternative nearby instead of waiting nearly two hours for the another spot to reopen.

If you’re exploring between La Spezia, Castelnuovo Magra, and Fosdinovo, keep in mind for a relaxed lunch, a glass of wine, or bottles from Liguria, across Italy, and beyond.

✨ Added to my growing list of Casa di May recommendations.

Sometimes the best local finds happen by accident.

5 reasons some travelers choose Casa di May Acquasanta over a hotel:

1. Because they want to feel at home in Italy.
2. Because they prefer the sound of a real Italian village over tourist crowds.
3. Because vacation shouldn’t start with the stress of finding parking.
4. Because they want to experience Italy like a local, not just visit it.
5. Because when something goes wrong, they want a host who actually cares.

That’s the kind of hospitality I believe in.

For me, feeling at home is the real luxury.
