Some advice while travelling in Italy.... what pinpoints you as a tourist when eating at a restaurant here?
(in no particular order:)
-Your clothes and shoes in particular.
-You ask for butter for the bread and you eat all the bread before the pasta course comes.
-You ask for ice.
-You ask for a cappuccino after 11 am.
-You ask for Italian American dishes which you do not find on the menù (spaghetti and meatballs, fried cheese sticks, spaghetti and bolognese sauce, garlic bread, pizza with pineapple, chicken parmesan or any pasta dish with chicken, ect) and which you will not find in any restaurant in Italy.
-You ask for a salad before the pasta course.
-You ask for a straw.
-You ask for any kind of salad dressing other than balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil. Yes, that includes the so-called Italian dressing which does not exist here. Ordinary vinegar is ok, as is lemon.
-You toast with a glass of water.
-You want to eat dinner before 8/9 pm.
-You tip excessively. Waiters receive a livable wage, but small tipping is appreciated (2 euros per person in a restaurant, 1 euro per person in a pizzeria, 10 cents per person while standing at a coffee shop).
