Nobody answers. The square goes quiet again. Then you can imagine them giggling from behind the corner.

It is the first time someone has rung this bell in decades.

Cerco un giovane architetto. Oggi, 1° maggio.

Nel centro storico di Manduria stiamo costruendo qualcosa che non esiste ancora in Italia: un club con camere, progettato intorno alla longevità, alla comunità e alla bellezza di un centro storico che merita molto di più di quello che ha avuto.

Il progetto architettonico è stupendo. Gli artigiani sono i migliori che abbia mai visto all’opera. Il cantiere è aperto, vivo e non si ferma.

Manca una figura che trasformi le idee in documenti e stia in cantiere a fianco di una squadra eccezionale. Disegni esecutivi, rilievi, computi metrici. La mattina si legge un muro. Il pomeriggio si lavora al CAD.

Non cerco qualcuno che voglia fare il concorso. Cerco qualcuno che voglia costruire qualcosa di vero, in uno dei centri storici più straordinari del Salento, dentro un progetto che fra tre anni la gente citerà come esempio.

Which leaves the practical question. Where do you actually live?

The masserie in the countryside are beautiful but isolated. The coast is crowded in summer and empty in winter. The new builds are everywhere and feel like nowhere. What’s left is the centro storico of a real town. Stone houses, star-vaulted ceilings, courtyards with a carob tree, neighbours who greet you in the morning, a piazza alive at sunset. The catch is that most of these homes have been abandoned for thirty years. Restoring one yourself is not a weekend project.

ManduriaShire acquires abandoned homes in the historic centre of Manduria, restores them with local craftsmen and contemporary comfort, and either operates them as an albergo diffuso under our 15Dolcevita brand, or sells them to people who fell in love with the town.

The flywheel is simple. You come as a guest. You stay in a fully restored home, walk to the bakery in the morning, sit in Piazza Garibaldi in the evening, meet others who made the same choice. After a week, or a month, or three visits, you decide whether Manduria is for you. If it is, we have a portfolio of properties at different stages of restoration, different sizes, different prices. If it is not, you had a beautiful holiday in Salento.

The first resident of 15dolcevita has arrived. Not in a suitcase. On a truck, with a crane, floating above the rooftops of the old town.
A two-hundred-year-old carob tree, the kind that throws real shade. In Salento they say you don’t plant a carob for yourself. You plant it for whoever comes next. We planted this one for the couples who one July evening will sit under its canopy, with a glass of Primitivo, and wonder how long it has been there.
The answer, long before us, and long after.

A rave in a masseria, end of winter. Among the olive trees, under the sun, with the right music and the right people. Dancing like you are twenty, with the awareness of fifty. Couples laughing side by side, rediscovering the pleasure of a light-hearted day, of an afternoon on the dancefloor without owing anyone an explanation.
Ibiza is beautiful, no doubt. But here there is something Ibiza does not have: the silence of the olive groves when the music drops, a glass of Primitivo instead of a shot, old friends recognising you from across the floor. This is not a second youth. It is the first real maturity of those who understood that having fun makes you live longer.
Salento, April. Summer has already begun.

Sunday morning in Manduria.
The square fills after mass. Coffee and pasticciotto at the bar, then a stop for nuts and a tray of pastries for the family lunch. The Beetles and Fiat 500s are visiting for the day, but the scene itself has not changed in sixty years.
This is the product. We did not invent it, we just recognised it.
