Before Marsala was called Marsala…
In 397 BC, Dionysius I of Syracuse attacked and destroyed the Phoenician city of Mozia.
Its survivors fled to the nearby mainland — and here, at the western tip of Sicily, Lilybaeum was born.
Over the centuries, Lilybaeum became an important Carthaginian and - after the first Punic war - a Roman city. About 1,000 years later, the Arabs came and its name over time evolved from Marsa Ali / Marsa Allah into Marsala.
Today, many traces of this ancient history can still be discovered throughout the city.
🏺 Museo Archeologico Baglio Anselmi is a wonderful place to start — especially for its remarkable Punic and Roman shipwrecks.
