Quarantana Locorotondo. Only 9 days of hanging around to go.

This old girl is known as Quarantana in Puglia. She hangs from many a balcony and street at this time of year. It's not the result of some weird lynch mob but she represents a widow in mourning for her husband who was killed on Shrove Tuesday. She therefore hangs around (literally) for the period of Lent. On Easter Sunday tradition is to burn her in a public ceremony (nice) symbolising the victory of life over death and the onset of Spring.

An Agave plant produces a flower spike once and once only after which it dies. An impressive way to go. So we are shortly to be one down.

One of the Agave plants has thrown up a flower spike this year. We believe this represents its last hurrah as it dies with the effort expended. Quite a sad prospect but very impressive.
