That's the thing about staying in Matino — you're not tied to one stretch of coast. Some mornings you'll want the wild pine-backed coves. Others, the shallow warm water where you can wade out for what feels like forever. And on the days you want to do nothing but lie on white sand until the sun goes down, that's within reach too.

Twenty minutes from your door. That's all it takes.

Punta Prosciutto has been called the Caribbean of Salento — and once you see it, you'll understand why. The water shifts from turquoise to emerald, the sand is white and impossibly fine, and the beach stretches for two kilometres backed by ancient dunes covered in Mediterranean scrub. The Telegraph named it one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

From Matino, take the SP340 toward Porto Cesareo — twenty minutes, no highway, no stress. Arrive early for the best spot on the free beach, which covers around 80% of the coastline. Bring a towel, something to read, and nothing that needs to be done before sunset.

What to do there:
- Swim in water so clear you can see the bottom in three metres
- Snorkel along the protected marine area of Porto Cesareo
- Walk the dunes — up to eight metres high, wild and completely untouched
- Try kitesurf or paddleboard if the wind is right
- Drive five minutes to Porto Cesareo for lunch and fresh fish straight from the boats

And when the afternoon is over, the road home takes twenty minutes. Shower, rooftop, Primitivo. Day complete.
