A breathtaking view looking over the wall that surrounds the hilltop town of Montalcino on an early foggy morning, looks like a glimpse of heaven. This picture was taken by our good friend Mauro Bovini who owns the hardware store in Montalcino.

The Montalcino Fortress was built in 1361 by Mino Foresi and Domenico di Feo, partly reusing the 13th-century foundations.

Around the middle of the 16th-century it became the last fortress of the Republic of Siena’s resistance against the Medici conquestand it’s this period that the external buttress dates to.

Some earlier structures were incorporated into the fortress, such as the tower of San Giovanni, an ancient basilica which became the castle’s chapel and the keep dedicated to Santo Martini.

Today, visitors can go into the internal courtyard, the terraces and the towers, from where they can enjoy a spectacular view.

“Brunello di Montalcino is a wine made with 100% Sangiovese with Italy’s highest DOCG classification. This is the Sangiovese that most wine critics cite to be the best in all of Italy.

Whether or not it is the best is entirely up to you, but it’s one of those wines to know and perhaps try… at least once in your life. Brunello di Montalcino is made with a local Tuscan type of Sangiovese.

It’s noted for having thicker-skinned berries and, because of this, Brunello produces wines with exceptionally bold fruit flavors, high tannin, and high acidity.

The fruit is a highlight to the enduring popularity of Brunello di Montalcino, but it’s the tannins and acidity that extend the life of this wine so it reaches perfection a decade or more later. It’s worth the wait.”

Start your day with breakfast in the courtyard and end it with a glass of Brunello on the rooftop terrace. 🍷
