A te è mai successo? Raccontacelo.

Here's how it goes: you walk into a bar with someone, you order, and while you're reaching for your wallet they've already paid. No discussion.
If you're not from here, your instinct is to insist. Don't. In Naples an offered coffee isn't paid back on the spot. It's paid back next time. Which is really a way of saying there will be a next time.
If you want to do something, just say thank you. Between friends the tab is never quite settled. That's the whole point.
And if one day you see someone pay for two coffees and drink only one, it isn't a mistake. It's a caffè sospeso, a coffee left for a stranger. But that's another rule.
Has it ever happened to you?
