The man behind the minerals - Markus Klement

Behind our mineral collection is a person who has dedicated much of his life to the world hidden inside the mountains.

Markus Klement discovered his fascination for minerals as a teenager, inspired by the South Tyrolean mineral collector Paul Fischnaller from Teis. What fascinated him was not simply the beauty of a crystal, but the search itself - learning to read the rock, understanding where minerals form and discovering what nature has created over millions of years.

For decades, Markus explored the Alps with his tools, experience and an ever-growing knowledge of the mountains. Some of his original boots and equipment can still be seen in our museum today - reminders of countless days spent searching in the field.

Over time, his world of minerals expanded far beyond the Alps. Friendships with collectors developed, journeys followed and exceptional specimens from many different parts of the world became part of his private collection.

In 2019, this lifelong passion found a permanent home in our Mineral Museum - created not simply to display minerals, but to share the knowledge, discoveries and stories behind them.

Today, Markus spends less time searching in the mountains, but his fascination remains at the heart of everything we do.

Thousands of stories.
Countless discoveries.
One lifelong passion.

The man behind the minerals and the reason they became the heart of our hotel.

MINERAL MONDAY ✦ THE FIRST DISCOVERY

Every collection has a beginning.

This small Teiser Kugel was the very first mineral our father Markus discovered in 1979 near Teis in South Tyrol.

At the time, he had no idea that one discovery would grow into a passion lasting more than four decades.

Teiser Kugeln are natural concretions found in volcanic rocks around Teis. When carefully opened, some reveal beautiful crystal-lined cavities, making every specimen a surprise.

This very first find became the starting point of what is today a collection of more than 1,500 minerals from around the world.

Every great story begins somewhere.
Ours began with this small stone.

MINERAL MONDAY ✦ VIVIANITE

This week, we journey deep into the Amazon rainforest of Brazil. 🇧🇷

Few minerals surprise collectors quite like Vivianite.

At first glance, its long, blade-like crystals captivate with intense shades of deep blue and emerald green. But these striking colours weren’t always there.

When Vivianite first forms, its crystals are usually colourless to pale green. Only over time, as they are exposed to oxygen and light, do they gradually transform into the rich blue-green tones that make this mineral so unmistakable.

Fun fact:
Vivianite is one of the very few minerals whose appearance continues to evolve even after its formation. The colours you admire today are the result of a slow natural process that can take years, making every specimen slightly different from the next.

Its elegant crystal habit, remarkable colour transformation and relative rarity have made Vivianite one of the most sought-after minerals among collectors worldwide.

At the Mineralienhotel, you can discover this exceptional specimen alongside more than 1,500 minerals from over 50 countries in our in-house Mineral Museum - included for all hotel guests.

For those wishing to bring a piece of the mineral world home, selected specimens are also available in our online shop.

MINERAL MONDAY ✦ STEINSALZ (ROCK SALT)

This week, we travel to Poland 🇵🇱

At first glance, these perfectly shaped cubes almost look man-made. But every crystal you see here was created entirely by nature.

Halite, better known as rock salt, forms when ancient saltwater slowly evaporates. Over thousands to millions of years, the salt crystallizes naturally, creating the distinctive cubic crystals that make halite one of the easiest minerals to recognize.

Fun fact:
The salt on your dining table and this museum specimen are exactly the same mineral. The difference? Table salt is processed before it reaches your kitchen, while specimens like this were left untouched by nature, allowing these remarkable crystals to grow over thousands to millions of years.

At the Mineralienhotel, you can discover halite alongside more than 1,500 mineral specimens from over 50 countries in our in-house Mineral Museum - included for all hotel guests.

Selected minerals are also available in our online shop.

MINERAL MONDAY ✦ ROCK CRYSTAL

Today, we travel to the Swiss Alps. 🇨🇭

This beautiful Rock Crystal comes from Piz Regina in the Valsertal, Switzerland - a region renowned for producing exceptional alpine quartz crystals.

Rock Crystal is the purest variety of quartz, formed from silicon dioxide (SiOâ‚‚). Deep within alpine fissures, mineral-rich water slowly crystallises over thousands to millions of years, creating the perfectly shaped crystals we admire today.

What makes alpine quartz so fascinating is its remarkable clarity. Each crystal reflects the geological conditions under which it formed - a quiet record of pressure, temperature and time.

Fun fact: For centuries, crystal hunters have searched the high Alps for specimens like this. Many are still discovered by hand in remote mountain fissures, continuing a tradition that has been passed down through generations.

✨ Discover this remarkable specimen and many more in our in-house Mineral Museum.

Selected minerals are also available in our online shop.
