This is Noto.
After the devastating earthquake of 1693 that destroyed the original town, Noto was completely rebuilt from scratch a few kilometres away. What rose in its place became one of the finest examples of Sicilian Baroque architecture.
The reconstruction was led by architects such as Rosario Gagliardi, Vincenzo Sinatra, and Paolo Labisi. They designed a harmonious city of golden limestone palaces, ornate churches, sweeping staircases and elaborate balconies. Local artisans carved the soft stone into masterpieces that still glow in the Sicilian sun.
The entire historic centre is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a powerful symbol of resilience and extraordinary creativity.
