Did you know that just a short drive from Noto lies a true world rarity of art history?

In neighboring Syracuse, you can see one of the most dramatic final masterpieces by the Baroque master Caravaggio: The Burial of Saint Lucy. Behind this nearly 4-meter-tall painting lies an astonishing story straight out of an adventure movie!

In 1606, Caravaggio was forced to flee Rome following a deadly duel. While many believe he killed a pr******te, in reality, he killed her pimp out of jealousy. After receiving a papal death sentence and later escaping from a prison in Malta, he arrived in Sicily in 1608. With the help of his old friend Mario Minniti, he secured a commission from the city of Syracuse to paint the martyrdom and burial of Saint Lucy—the city’s patron saint—for the very site where legend says she was executed. Caravaggio chose not to depict angels or heavenly glory; instead, he poured onto the canvas his own suffocating fear, raw human grief, and the painful reality of death.

Today, you can view the painting in the Church of Santuario di Santa Lucia al Sepolcro in Syracuse.

A morning in Sicily isn't complete without one very specific local ritual: Granita & Brioche con Tuppo.

If you're visiting our beautiful baroque town, skip the standard hotel breakfast at least once and do it the authentic Sicilian way:

1) Choose your flavor: Almond (Mandorla) and Lemon (Limone) are the absolute classics, but Pistachio is a local favorite.

2) The technique: Tear off the "tuppo" (the little pastry ball on top of the brioche) and dip it straight into the cold granita.

3) Where to go: Sit outdoors at a café along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, watch the town wake up, and take your time.

On the last Sunday of August, Noto celebrates its patron saint, San Corrado Confalonieri. Although his official feast day is February 19th, the capital of Sicilian Baroque truly shines in full glory at the end of summer to honor him.

Highlights of this grand celebration you can't miss:
Solemn Mass at the Noto Cathedral, celebrated by the Bishop, followed by the Relic Procession, where the silver urn holding the saint’s remains is carried through the historic streets. The procession is accompanied by the massive “cilii”: giant, ornate votive candles carried by locals and community groups.

This festival is more than just centuries-old heritage—it reflects San Corrado’s legacy of faith, simplicity, and devotion. During this time, Noto reveals the true, vibrant soul of Sicily. 🤍

The Legend of the Testa di Moro (The Moor’s Head):
Back in the 12th century, during Moorish rule in Palermo, a beautiful local girl spent her days tending to her balcony flowers. One day, a young Moorish merchant walked past, fell instantly in love, and swept her off her feet.

Their romance was intense, but it came with a heartbreaking secret: the young man was scheduled to return to the East, where his wife and children were waiting for him.

Blinded by jealousy, betrayal, and heartbreak, the girl took matters into her own hands. While he slept, she killed him, cut off his head, and transformed it into a pot where she planted lush basil. The herb grew magnificently, envied by all the neighbors—who soon copied the shape in clay to ensure their plants would thrive just as well.

Today, these iconic Teste di Moro symbolize Sicily’s rich culture, passion, and fiery history.
