In principio fu la casa patrizia della nota famiglia inglese Ingham Whitaker. Nel 1874 fu trasformato da residenza privata a lussuoso hotel della Belle Époque. Una preziosa cornice in una Sicilia del Novecento, nella quale comincia ad affermarsi la cultura del Libe

rty con Ernesto Basile, uno dei più importanti architetti italiani dell’Ottocento. Con i significativi guizzi e decori cari all’Art Nouveau, l’architetto palermitano, progetta con proprio talento, modifiche importanti all’interno del Grand Hotel et Des Palmes, destinato a divenire uno dei luoghi più importanti di vita mondana “fin de siècle”. In cerca di ispirazione per completare la sua ultima opera, l’illustre compositore Richard Wagner vi soggiornò con la moglie Cosima Liszt in una suite rivolta sulla silenziosa strada, la Presidential Suite oggi dedicata al grande musicista.

Originally built to be the private residence of the Ingham - Whitaker family, it was converted in 1874 into a luxurious hotel. In search of inspiration to complete his last opera, the composer Richard Wagner, stayed with his wife Cosima Liszt in a suite that today has been dedicated to him.
