ANCIENT SHIP OF PISA: THE MUSEUM IS OPENING
Late in 1998, excavators digging the foundation for a new train station just 500 yards from the Leaning Tower of Pisa discovered a perfectly preserved, 2,000-year-old Roman ship. Further digging revealed a veritable graveyard of ancient ships. So far, 10 vessels dating from the third century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. have been recovered, all in surprisingly good condition and several with a vast amount of well-preserved cargo. Until this discovery, no one knew there had been a commercial port in Pisa. Now archaeologists working on the site wonder what happened to entomb this port 2 millennia ago.
