Insalata di farro, zucchine, qualche oliva. Una caraffa con menta e lime.
A mezzogiorno la tavola si apparecchia sotto la tenda, dove l'ombra regge fino alle tre.
Si mangia leggero, perché il pomeriggio è già deciso: si torna in piscina.
Farro salad, courgettes, a few olives. A jug of water with mint and lime.
At midday the table is laid under the awning, where the shade holds until three.
Lunch stays light, because the afternoon has already been decided: the pool.

Le grafie cambiano lingua da un foglio all'altro.
In ogni villa della tenuta c'è un libro sul tavolo, con la penna accanto. È l'ultima cosa che si tocca prima di andare via: qualcuno scrive tre parole, qualcun altro racconta una settimana intera.
Grazie a chi ci ha lasciato qualcosa di suo in questi anni. Se ripasserete, il libro è sempre lì, sullo stesso tavolo.
The handwriting changes language from one page to the next.
Every villa on the estate has a book on the table, with a pen beside it. It's the last thing anyone touches before leaving: some write three words, others give an account of the whole week.
Thank you to everyone who has left something of their own here over the years. If you come back, the book will be where it always is, on the same table.

Il sole cala dietro i pioppi e la facciata di Casanova prende una luce arancione.
Un casolare al centro della tenuta, con la villa Medicea che si vede dal prato: le scale esterne portano alla cucina, dove il lavello in pietra è rimasto quello di sempre, e la vecchia colombaia è diventata un salotto.
Fuori, l'erba scende verso la piscina. L'acqua resta fresca fino a sera.
Quattro camere, otto ospiti, giardino e piscina riservati a chi alloggia.

Late light behind the poplars, and Casanova's façade turns orange.
The farmhouse sits at the centre of the estate, the Medici villa in view across the lawn. Outside stairs take you up to the kitchen, where the stone sink has never been replaced, and the old dovecote has become a sitting room.
Beyond the house the ground slopes to the pool, and the water holds its cool until evening.
Four bedrooms, eight guests, with garden and pool kept for those staying.

L'ombra degli alberi si allunga sulla tovaglia e cambia disegno a ogni folata.
È il momento in cui il giardino di Villa Casanova si prepara alla cena: la tavola è già lì, le scale esterne portano dalla cucina al prato, e le ombre si allungano.

A Camugliano le querce scendono fino all'acqua.
È il motivo per cui a metà pomeriggio, quando fuori non si muove niente, qui si sta ancora bene. Cicale, ombra, qualche sdraio esposta al sole per chi vuole.
The oaks at Camugliano stand right down to the water's edge.
It's the reason that by mid-afternoon, with nothing stirring outside, this is still a good place to be. Cicadas, shade, a few loungers out in the sun for those who prefer it.

C'è un suono che in Toscana significa estate piena. Le cicale nei campi, verso mezzogiorno, quando l'aria ferma trattiene tutto.
There's a sound that in Tuscany means the height of summer. Cicadas in the fields, around midday, when the still air holds everything in place.

𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮, per chi soggiorna in tenuta, è la gita serale perfetta. Quarantacinque minuti di strada tra le colline, si arriva che il caldo ha mollato la presa e la pietra delle piazze è ancora tiepida.
Poi c'è il ritorno. La campagna buia, i cipressi appena visibili, Camugliano che aspetta.
Forse la parte più bella della serata.
𝗩𝗼𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗿𝗮, for those staying at the estate, is the perfect evening out. Forty-five minutes through the hills, and you arrive to find the heat has finally let go and the stone of the piazzas is still warm.
Then there's the drive back. The countryside dark, the cypress trees just visible, Camugliano waiting.
Perhaps the best part of the evening.

Le mura di Villa Belvedere sono di quelle spesse, all'antica, con un talento che si apprezza soprattutto a luglio: dentro, il caldo non entra.

Un bicchiere di bianco, le imposte accostate, la luce del pomeriggio che resta sulla soglia. L'aperitivo migliore dell'estate si può fare anche qui al fresco.
Villa Belvedere's walls are the old kind — thick, built to last — with a quality that earns its keep in July: inside, the heat simply doesn't get in.

A glass of white, the shutters half-drawn, the afternoon light waiting at the threshold. The best aperitivo of the summer can happen right here, in the cool.

In questi giorni si trebbia: i rimorchi vanno e vengono tra i campi e i granai, e chi è negli agriturismi li sente passare in lontananza.
Fa parte del soggiorno, questo. La campagna vera ha un suo calendario, e non si ferma per nessuno.
These are threshing days: trailers move back and forth between the fields and the granaries, and guests in the villas hear them passing in the distance.
It's part of the stay. The real countryside runs on its own calendar and waits for no one.

Tra i vicini di casa di Camugliano c'è anche un anfiteatro scavato nelle colline di Lajatico. Lo ha voluto Andrea Bocelli, che da queste parti è nato, e per quasi tutto l'anno fa onore al suo nome: Teatro del Silenzio .

A fine luglio si sveglia. Tre serate - 21, 23 e 25 - e poi di nuovo quiete fino all'estate prossima.
Da qui si arriva con una strada che è già metà dello spettacolo.
Among Camugliano's neighbours there is an amphitheatre carved into the hills of Lajatico. It was built at the wish of Andrea Bocelli, who was born in these parts, and for most of the year it lives up to its name: Teatro del Silenzio - the Theatre of Silence.

It comes to life in late July. Three evenings — the 21st, 23rd and 25th — and then quiet again until next summer.
The road to get there is already half the show.
