Tucked away on the slopes of Rome’s Aventine Hill, the Rose Garden is one of the city’s most beautiful seasonal experiences 🌹

With around 1,100 varieties of roses from across the world, the garden is filled with colour, fragrance and some truly unusual blooms. There are roses with green petals, roses that change colour over time and even a famously “smelly” rose.

But it’s not just the flowers that make this place special. The views stretch across some of Rome’s most recognisable landmarks, from the Palatine Hill and Circus Maximus to the dome of the Synagogue and the Vittoriano.

Entry is free and the gardens are open daily from 8:30am - 7:30pm, but the season only runs until 14 June, so don’t leave it too late to visit.

If you’re in Rome during spring, this is one spot definitely worth experiencing 🌸

💡Did you know Rome has more ancient obelisks than any other city in the world?
Scattered across piazzas, fountains and famous landmarks, there are 13 ancient obelisks throughout Rome - many brought from Egypt by Roman emperors over 2,000 years ago as symbols of power and prestige.

One of the most fascinating is the obelisk in St Peter’s Square. Unlike many Egyptian obelisks, this one has no hieroglyphs carved into it. It originally stood in ancient Egypt before being brought to Rome on a specially constructed ship around AD 37 by Emperor Caligula, who had it erected at the Circus of Gaius and Nero on Vatican Hill.

Then in 1586 (440 year ago), Pope Sixtus V ordered that it be moved to the centre of St Peter’s Square, where it still stands today. The relocation itself became legendary - involving hundreds of workers, horses and complex lifting systems to carefully transport and raise the massive granite monument without breaking it.

If you’re in Rome this weekend, Sunday offers something a little different.
That’s because, on the first Sunday of each month, some of the city’s most well-known sites open for free, including the Colosseum, Pantheon, Baths of Caracalla and Castel Sant’Angelo.

It’s a great opportunity to experience these places without the usual ticket cost, but it does come with a little extra planning.

Lines can be long, entry is generally first-come, first-served, and pre-booking is often not available. An early start makes all the difference.

For some guests, the cost savings are worth the wait and the crowds. For others, visiting on a quieter morning later in the week is a more relaxed way to take it all in.

If you’re unsure, feel free to chat with our reception team - they’re always happy to help you plan your time in Rome.

Castel Sant’Angelo is one of the museums included in Italy’s national “free museum” initiative. Originally built as a mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian, it has also served as a fortress and papal residence, before becoming a museum.

✨ This is Ancient Rome, brought back to life ✨
From 18–21 April, Natale di Roma marks the city’s 2779th birthday with four days of parades, gladiators, and large-scale historical re-enactments across iconic sites like the Circus Maximus and Roman Forum.

The main celebration falls on 21 April (Dies Natalis Urbis) - the official birthday - with formal ceremonies, symbolic rituals and major performances, continuing a tradition that dates back more than 2,000 years.

With over 1,300 re-enactors from across Europe, it’s one of the largest Ancient Rome re-enactments in the world.

What makes it even more special? It all takes place in the real ancient setting -

not a staged venue - blending performance, history and culture into one immersive experience.
And it’s completely free.

⭐️ Via Crucis at the Colosseum, Rome ⭐️
Each Good Friday, Rome pauses for one of its most powerful and moving traditions - the Via Crucis (Way of the Cross) at the Colosseum. This candlelit procession reflects on the fourteen moments of Christ’s passion, drawing thousands of pilgrims and visitors into quiet reflection in one of the world’s most iconic settings.

This year marks a truly historic occasion. For the first time in over 60 years, a Pope will carry the cross through all 14 stations of the Via Crucis at the Colosseum - with Pope Leo XIV presiding over this year’s ceremony. As night falls, the cross will be illuminated by torchlight, moving from station to station in a deeply symbolic and unforgettable experience.

This annual tradition regularly draws more than 20,000 people, and while tickets are not required, we strongly recommend arriving early to secure a place.

If you’re in Rome, this is a moment not to be missed - a powerful expression of faith and tradition at the heart of the Eternal City.

Tucked away in the heart of Rome, this courtyard feels a world away from the city’s buzz 🌿

You pass it each time you come and go from Domus Australia and it brings a quiet sense of calm. The gentle sound of the fountain is always there - that familiar Roman detail, framed by terracotta rooftops, soft arches and a simple garden.

It’s quiet, peaceful, and one of those details that stays with you long after you check out.

This Saturday, 21 March, the banks of the Tiber River will transform for the Tiber Masquerade (Carnevale Tiberino) - a lively, local event that brings together culture, community and a touch of theatre.

Taking place between Scalo de Pinedo and Castel Sant'Angelo, the celebration unfolds both on land and on water, with:
• 🎭 Traditional Roman masked characters and performers
• 🚣‍♀️ A colourful procession of canoes and small boats along the river (departing 11:00, approx. 4 km return via Castel Sant’Angelo)
• 🚶‍♀️ The same route along via land will be full of family-friendly activities and entertainment for children
Key timings:
11:00 - Activities begin from Scalo de Pinedo (on water and on foot)
12:30 - Arrival at Castel Sant’Angelo
13:30 - Stop at Ponte Sisto (water participants)
14:00 - Return to Scalo de Pinedo

Beyond the fun, the event also highlights the importance of the river to the city - encouraging locals and visitors to reconnect with this historic waterway.

If you’re in Rome, head down to the riverbanks and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

If you’ve ever tried to get close to the Trevi Fountain but simply couldn’t move through the crowds, this video will look very familiar. However, the way we visit one of Rome’s most loved landmarks has changed.

Access to the lower basin area at the Trevi Fountain is now regulated, with a €2 ticket required for non-resident visitors who would like to step down to the lower viewing area directly in front of the water.

Tickets can be purchased online via the official Vivaticket platform (link in comments below) or from ushers at the fountain.

It remains free for Rome residents with proof of residency. Visitors can still view the fountrain from street level for free.
