From someone who has lived here for decades.

Not a Sunday. Not in summer. The crowd logic in Rome is almost always the opposite of what people expect.

This is where we live and eat. The restaurants here serve Romans, not itineraries.

Show up at 7 and you will be eating alone in an empty room. Wait until the city does.

Summer storms arrive fast and leave fast. The people who know this stay dry.

Nobody tells you these things before you arrive.
And honestly, most people figure them out on day three — which is also usually the day the trip starts feeling right.
We have been hosting guests here since 2011. Every year, the same surprises.

Since everyone in Rome is currently looking for shade, cold drinks, and good gelato, this week’s recommendation felt fairly obvious.

Lemongrass has been one of our favorite gelaterias for years.

Not because it has the biggest selection in town, but because it focuses on doing a few things exceptionally well.

The pistachio is wonderful, the zabaione is famous for good reason, and even the classic flavors somehow feel more interesting here.

It is the kind of place where you immediately notice the quality of the ingredients.

And the kind of place many locals return to again and again.

Which, in Rome, is usually the best compliment a place can receive.

Could you go from Rome to 1,600 metres above sea level and then have lunch over the Adriatic Sea on the same day?

One of the things we love most about central Italy is the incredible variety of landscapes that can be experienced in a single day.

This journey started in Rome at 7:30 AM.

By 9:00 AM we were already at Campo Imperatore, often called "Italy's Little Tibet", surrounded by the vast plateau of the Gran Sasso National Park and the imposing C***o Grande.

From there we continued to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages, before reaching the spectacular fortress of Rocca Calascio, standing high above the surrounding mountains.

A few hours later, the scenery changed completely.

The mountains gave way to the Adriatic Sea and the famous Trabocchi Coast, where we enjoyed lunch on a traditional trabocco, one of the ancient wooden fishing structures that have become a symbol of this coastline.
