Could you go from Rome to 1,600 metres above sea level and then have lunch over the Adriatic Sea on the same day?

One of the things we love most about central Italy is the incredible variety of landscapes that can be experienced in a single day.

This journey started in Rome at 7:30 AM.

By 9:00 AM we were already at Campo Imperatore, often called "Italy's Little Tibet", surrounded by the vast plateau of the Gran Sasso National Park and the imposing C***o Grande.

From there we continued to Santo Stefano di Sessanio, one of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages, before reaching the spectacular fortress of Rocca Calascio, standing high above the surrounding mountains.

A few hours later, the scenery changed completely.

The mountains gave way to the Adriatic Sea and the famous Trabocchi Coast, where we enjoyed lunch on a traditional trabocco, one of the ancient wooden fishing structures that have become a symbol of this coastline.

From Rome to the mountains.
From the mountains to the sea.

A journey through some of the many souls of Italy.

From the Apennines to the Adriatic: A Day Through the Heart of Abruzzo

Some journeys are measured in kilometers. Others are measured in contrasts. This day trip from Rome is one of those rare experiences that allows you to cross entirely different worlds in just a few hours: high mountain plateaus, medieval stone villages, ancient fortresses, and finally the Adriatic Sea, where lunch is served above the water on a traditional fishing platform....

Rome in summer can be wonderful.

Rome in a heatwave requires a slightly different approach 😌

This is usually when the most carefully planned itineraries begin to suffer.

Our advice?

Slow down.
Eat longer lunches.
Use the cooler hours wisely.
Leave space for rest.

The goal is not to “push through.”

The goal is to enjoy the city enough to remember why you came.

(And yes, gelato absolutely helps.)

There is the Italy everyone knows.

And then there is the Italy people remember forever.

Not because it was more famous,
but because it felt more personal.

This is one of the things we care about most — whether our guests stay with us in Rome, or continue beyond the city with us.

Helping them experience a version of Italy that feels less scheduled… and much more alive.

Hospitality is not only about offering a comfortable place to stay.

Sometimes, it is also about helping people avoid very preventable mistakes.

Over the years, we have learned that the difference between a good trip and a memorable one is often surprisingly small.

The wrong reservation.
The wrong restaurant.
The wrong pace.

Or simply trying to do too much.

This is part of what we love doing — helping our guests enjoy Rome (and sometimes the rest of Italy) a little more wisely.

Between the asphalt and the fields, three shades of green.

The Val d’Orcia has this rare ability to turn even a simple road into part of the landscape itself.

Seen from above, it almost feels drawn by hand.
And maybe that is the real beauty of the slower Tuscany: it never tries to impress you — it simply lets you pass through it.

This photo was taken near Monticchiello, on a quiet morning, with nothing but the sound of the wind, a few curves in the road, and the feeling of still having time.

Not every guest arrives planning to travel beyond Rome.

Sometimes it starts with a conversation over breakfast.

A question about where to go next.
A place they had not considered.
A different way of experiencing Italy.

That is one of the things we enjoy most here.

Not simply hosting people in Rome, but helping shape what comes next.

Sometimes it is a restaurant recommendation.

Sometimes… the Amalfi Coast.

Italy is not a country that rewards rushing.

It looks beautiful from a distance, of course.

But the real magic is usually in the details — the places you stop, the conversations you have, the lunch that becomes longer than expected, the road you would never have chosen on your own.

This is exactly why we created our journeys.

Not tours.
Not crowded itineraries.

Just thoughtful, private experiences for couples who want to enjoy Italy properly.

(And yes, sometimes that includes views like this.)
