The Summer Lake in Piazza Navona
From the 1600s to the late 1800s, one of the favorite summer pastimes for Romans during the month of August was to cool off in the lake that was “created” in Piazza Navona.
It was customary on Saturdays to close the fountain drains, flooding the entire square. This would create a massive pool that was maintained until Sunday evening, when the drains were reopened and the square emptied.
At that time, unlike today, Piazza Navona had a concave cobblestone surface, and the water level would rise up to 60 cm (about 2 feet).
People would stroll through the lake on foot or in carriages, the buildings were decorated for the occasion, and fireworks were often set off.

Dal '600 alla fine dell' '800 uno dei divertimenti dei romani durante il mese di agosto era rinfrescarsi nel lago che veniva "creato" in Piazza Navona.
Era uso il sabato chiudere gli scarichi delle fontane allagando tutta la piazza. Si creava così un'enorme piscina che era mantenuta fino alla domenica sera quando gli scarichi erano riaperti e la piazza svuotata.
Piazza Navona a quell'epoca, diversamente da oggi, aveva il selciato a conca ed il livello dell'acqua saliva a raggiungere i 60 cm.
Le persone passeggiavano in questo lago a piedi o in carrozza, i palazzi erano addobbati a festa e spesso si facevano fuochi d'artificio.
