First of all because you can reach the top with an elevator (ticket is not cheap, but it includes the "portico" the Risorgimento museum and access to Palazzo Venezia).

The Jasmine walk

Also the Vatican has a railway: it was built in 1929 to connect the Vatican City to the Italian Reign. Years passed by and the railway was abandoned, but on the occasion of the Jubilee of 2000 one of the two tracks has been removed, leaving space for a suggestive walk that not everyone knows in Rome: it is the Jasmine walk.
In order to reach it you have to get inside St. Peter's Station, then head the track number 1 and turn right walking along the railway: there begins a path that allows you to admire St. Peter's and its dome from a different, new perspective.
The Jasmine walk took its name both from the white jasmine flowers which line the path in summertime and from the "jasmine valley" which once extended from the Vatican to the Gianicolo hill.
For your kids you can find nearby the "FattOrietta", a didactic farm with trees, plants and animals like ponies, goats, pigs, and cows.
