🍉 Il 24 agosto, a Roma, si festeggiava… il cocomero!
Fino all’Ottocento, ogni anno in questo giorno, l’Isola Tiberina si trasformava in una grande sagra popolare in onore di San Bartolomeo.
Il momento più atteso? Alcuni cocomeri venivano lanciati nel Tevere e i ragazzini si tuffavano tra i gorghi del fiume per contendersene i pezzi. Un gioco amatissimo, ma tutt’altro che sicuro: nel 1870 venne vietato a causa dei numerosi incidenti.
Della sagra oggi resta solo il ricordo… ma il cocomero 🍉 continua a essere uno dei piaceri intramontabili delle estati romane.

🍉 On August 24, Rome used to celebrate… the watermelon!
Until the 19th century, every year on this day, Tiber Island turned into a large popular festival in honor of Saint Bartholomew.
The highlight? Some watermelons were thrown into the Tiber, and local boys would dive into the river’s swirling waters to compete for the pieces. A much-loved game, but a very dangerous one: in 1870, it was banned after too many accidents.
The festival has long disappeared, surviving only in memory… but watermelon 🍉 remains one of the timeless pleasures of Roman summers.
