Grazie Francesco!
To day in Rome we saw two funerals for you: one a regular funeral in Saint Peter’s Square and near streets including under our windows: a normal funeral that we have seen many times before when a Pope had died. The other one was a completely different funeral. To see a simple casket carried on a back of an old white pick-up truck driving thru central Rome and with thousand of people standing on both side of our familiar streets with tears in their eyes all very emotional It was something that was never seen before and I am sure it will not happen again. This was Francesco for us, a jesuit that spoke always words from the Gospel, but he did it in his own style, simple, friendly, compassionate and funny.
One photo is the Michelangelo’s Cupola with lights on since you were in the hospital so that a night time it looks like Rome had two moons. The other was taken on the first day of your papacy in the Cathedral of Saint John in Lateran when instead of regarding the rich, powerful and important people that came to meet the Pope for the first time, you went enstead to talk and comfort the old, the sick and poor ones that were in the church. The man in the right corner of the photo was our guest and he had a metal leg and walked with a limp and you stopped and talk to him. I knew from the moment that you will be a different Pope. A people’s Pope coming from the end of the world. Thank you Francis.

Last time was 2012 (when these photos were take) and it will be 2032 when we will have the same views. Like clock work,it will snow in Rome every 20 years. The city will come to a stand still (closed schools, business, stores, transportation; only just lot of fun) since no one knows how to drive over snow and the only salt available is in small package in the kitchen the city will now belongs to us pedestrians!! Come to see the Roman Ruins covered by snow!!!

Secrets of Italy - Saint Valentine Celebration = Roman Lupercalia.
Most of the holidays we celebrated in the Western World to day are Roman Celebration that were transformed in Christian Celebrations.
A good example of this changes is in the way we celebrate Saint Valentine holiday.
During the Roman Time this festivity was called Lupercalia. Remember any words that contained the word “Lupa” had to do with fertility. Our symbol the she-wolf, the woman. the mother and even a pr******te since all were able to give birth they were very respected at that time and had a special place in the Roman society.
During the Roman time, giving many births was also considered a civic duty by the people to maintain a strong empire.
The month of February was considered the fertile month of the year since they believed to be the best month to start having a successful pregnancy: the mother will be safe during the spring and summer and deliver the baby at the beginning of fall so that the infant will have enough time to be able to survive the winter.
On February 15, we will have the Lupercalia. The festivity will be in honor of Faunus. He was rustic very h***y god.; his reign was the forest, plants and fields and he wade sure that all the animals will be fertile. So he became the protector of fertility also for the humans. He looked like half man on the top body and half of a goat on the lower part but he had a short tail and horns (see the photos). Very similar to Greek God Pam.
All the festivities would begin with some animals to be sacrificed and prayers and then the celebration would start.
All men in the Empire will exit their house naked to show to be sexually excited but also ready to do their civic duty for Rome!!!
Also all women were excited and will consent to all the men's requests and nobody was refused. Great cure for depression.
The celebration lasted all day and some time after wars and plagues lasted more days.
After nine month later all over the Roman Empire we will have every year a baby boomers!!!
As the old Roman proverb says: all good things must come to an end. here it happened and after the Romans we will go what is called the Dark Ages (no more fun).
On 494 AD, the Pope Gelasius forbade participation in this festival. Not a welcoming action so to please the population he finally replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine Day. He changed the date to the 14th one day earlier and not more in honor of Faunus but to St. Valentine (photo below) that was a priest here in Rome that after being arrested was condemned to death for his faith, beaten with clubs, and finally beheaded on Feb. 14, AD 270. It will be only a celebration of the spiritual love for each others. The tradition will be to exchange flowers, candies, notes and may of if you are lucky you can still exchange some Roman Lupa even today!!!

Secret of Italy - Our ancestors besides being Italic descendants they were also ethnically mixed with: the Celtics, Byzantines, Arabs, Vikings, Normans, Spanish and Bourbons.
With the Fall of Rome in 476 AD, Italy was fragmented into numerous city-state and regional polities, a situation that would remain until the complete unification of our country in 1871.
In the North they had the wealth with Maritime Republics (Venice and Genoa), Central Italy remained under the Papal States while Southern Italy remained largely Feudal and was occupied by different foreigners.
From all these different occupations Italy became a mix of different civilizations: a very interesting one even it was for a short time was the Normans Occupation of Southern Italy with Sicily and Sardinia (from year 999 to 1194) creating the Kingdom of the Sun.
They arrived as mercenaries in small groups but then they established Fiefdoms and state of their own and they became independent. They also unified their forces along with the Vikings and Arabs.
To remind us of these years, all over Southern Italy we can admire castles that were build under the teaching of the Normans builders. They were the first castle ever been built in Italy. In their short time of their stay, the Normans were able to built almost 100 castles of all different sizes and locations.
Traveling to Southern Italy we cannot but thanks the Normans to have left us such great gifts and to create the Kingdom of the Sun. They could not have given us a more perfect name!!!

Secrets of Italy - The final day of Julius Caesar in Rome.
Photos:
1) Largo Argentina . The tall Roman Pine Tree (like an umbrella) on the left side in the photo, was planned exactly on the spot were Julius Caesar was murdered on 15 of March of 44 BC. The killing was done inside the temporary Senate while the permanent Senate was rebuilt in the Forum. Do not feel bad, all the participants were killed or died by committed su***de.
2) Remains of Julius Caesar grave in the Forum. This shows the ruin where the body of Julius Caesar was displayed for the crowds to give homage and the same place where Shakespeare in his play “Julius Caesar” had Marc Anthony gave the eulogy one of the best ever being written above the body of dead Julius Caesar. The legend goes while Marc Antony is speaking, the body of Julius transformed himself into a big eagle and flew off to became a God. So not burial site is found in Rome for him.
3) It shows the exact spot where the body of Julius Caesar was laid and still to-day after more than 2000 years, ladies will leave flowers all year around in his memory!!
We still love him and he left all his possessions to the people of Rome. No so bad for a politician.

Secret of Italy - Saturnia’s Natural Springs Tuscany
In southwest Tuscany, midway between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Monte Amiata — that dormant volcano that dominates southern Tuscan landscapes — Saturnia is remote, yet for more than 2,000 years people have journeyed here for free. Roman legions used to bathe on their post-battle returns to the capital — the sulfurous waters were said to heal wounds. Medieval popes made the journey for a spiritual soak.and because the water emerges at a constant 37.5C (99.5 F.), it’s an ideal winter retreat. From the pool you can watch the clouds roll over those rippling Tuscan hills — far warmer in your bathers than in your coat. Plus, winter is when the spring is at its most atmospheric, as tendrils of steam dance across the surface and the first and last dips of the day are in the gloaming.
