Grazie Francesco!
To day in Rome we saw two funerals for you: one a regular funeral in Saint Peter’s Square and near streets including under our windows: a normal funeral that we have seen many times before when a Pope had died. The other one was a completely different funeral. To see a simple casket carried on a back of an old white pick-up truck driving thru central Rome and with thousand of people standing on both side of our familiar streets with tears in their eyes all very emotional It was something that was never seen before and I am sure it will not happen again. This was Francesco for us, a jesuit that spoke always words from the Gospel, but he did it in his own style, simple, friendly, compassionate and funny.
One photo is the Michelangelo’s Cupola with lights on since you were in the hospital so that a night time it looks like Rome had two moons. The other was taken on the first day of your papacy in the Cathedral of Saint John in Lateran when instead of regarding the rich, powerful and important people that came to meet the Pope for the first time, you went enstead to talk and comfort the old, the sick and poor ones that were in the church. The man in the right corner of the photo was our guest and he had a metal leg and walked with a limp and you stopped and talk to him. I knew from the moment that you will be a different Pope. A people’s Pope coming from the end of the world. Thank you Francis.
