Da viaggiatrice compulsiva, ogni volta che esco dall'Europa compilo permessi di ingresso. Il più famoso è l'ESTA americano, ma ormai quasi tutti i Paesi chiedono un piccolo contributo simbolico per entrare.

Nelle chiacchierate con i miei ospiti extra-europei ho sempre detto: "Trovo assurdo che l'Italia, e l'Europa intera, non abbiano un sistema del genere!". Siamo il museo a cielo aperto più grande del mondo, eppure siamo sempre stati un passo indietro.

Ma finalmente ci siamo: sta per entrare in vigore l'ETIAS. Sarà un'autorizzazione al viaggio (dal costo di soli 7 euro) richiesta a tutti i turisti che non hanno bisogno di visto e che provengono da Paesi fuori dall'area Schengen.

È una notizia meravigliosa! Questi piccoli contributi porteranno introiti fondamentali che, spero davvero, verranno reinvestiti per migliorare i servizi del nostro comparto turistico. È bello vedere una regola di buonsenso che finalmente diventa realtà per proteggere e valorizzare la nostra accoglienza.

As an avid traveler, every time I leave Europe, I fill out entry permits. The most famous is the American ESTA, but by now almost all countries ask for a small, symbolic contribution to enter.

During chats with my non-European guests, I have always said: "I find it absurd that Italy, and the whole of Europe, doesn't have such a system!". We are the largest open-air museum in the world, yet we have always been a step behind.

But we are finally here: ETIAS is about to come into effect. It will be a travel authorization (costing only 7 euros) required for all tourists who do not need a visa and who come from countries outside the Schengen area.

This is wonderful news! These small contributions will bring in essential revenue that, I truly hope, will be reinvested to improve the services in our tourism sector. It's beautiful to see a common-sense rule finally becoming reality to protect and enhance our hospitality.

Chi mi conosce lo sa, per me la colazione è un argomento intoccabile. Sono la prima che quando viaggia ha le sue fissazioni, al punto da portarmi dietro i miei biscotti!

Un giorno o due prima del vostro arrivo, vi mando sempre un messaggio su WhatsApp per aiutarvi con la strada e le indicazioni. Ed è esattamente in quel momento che, puntualmente, mi fate tutti la stessa domanda: "Ma per la colazione... io ho delle intolleranze, come facciamo?".

La risposta è semplice: a Maison Flaminio non vi lascio certo a bocca asciutta con due gallette tristi. Che abbiate bisogno del senza glutine (con un'offerta che va dal pane ai biscotti, fino alla Nutella) o che preferiate alternative al latte tradizionale (mandorla, avena, soia, riso), l'area snack è rifornita per far sentire tutti coccolati e a casa.

Il momento della colazione deve essere un piacere assoluto, non una preoccupazione. E tu di quale prodotto non riesci proprio a fare a meno la mattina?

Anyone who knows me knows that breakfast is an untouchable topic for me. I'm the first one to have my own obsessions when traveling, to the point of bringing my own cookies with me!

A day or two before your arrival, I always send you a WhatsApp message to help you with directions. And it's exactly in that moment that, without fail, you all ask me the same question: "But for breakfast... I have some intolerances, how does that work?".

The answer is simple: at Maison Flaminio I certainly won't leave you empty-handed with two sad crackers. Whether you need gluten-free options (with an offer ranging from bread to cookies, up to Nutella) or you prefer alternatives to traditional milk (almond, oat, soy, rice), the snack area is stocked to make everyone feel pampered and at home.

Ricordo ancora quando nel 2010 il Comune di Roma ci avvisò dell'introduzione della tassa di soggiorno. Da allora le regole sono cambiate, gli importi sono saliti (oggi si va dai 4 ai 10 euro a notte), ma c'è una dritta fondamentale che ripeto sempre ai miei ospiti e ai miei amici.

La tassa di soggiorno è una tassa comunale legata all'effettivo pernottamento. Questo significa che va pagata sul posto, al momento del vostro arrivo.

Diffidate dei siti di prenotazione che vi inseriscono la tassa di soggiorno nel totale da pagare in anticipo con la carta di credito. Perché? Perché se per un imprevisto dovete cancellare il viaggio, la tassa di soggiorno non è dovuta! Ma se l'avete già pagata a un grande portale (magari con una tariffa non rimborsabile), riavere indietro quei soldi diventerà un incubo burocratico.

Pagate sempre e solo la stanza in anticipo, ma saldate le tasse locali direttamente alla struttura. Vi è mai capitato di pagarla online e poi dover disdire il viaggio?

I still remember when in 2010 the Municipality of Rome notified us about the introduction of the city tax. Since then, the rules have changed, the amounts have gone up (today it ranges from 4 to 10 euros per night), but there is a crucial piece of advice I always repeat to my guests and friends.

The city tax is a local tax linked to the actual overnight stay. This means that it must be paid on the spot, upon your arrival.

Beware of booking sites that include the city tax in the total amount to be paid in advance with your credit card. Why? Because if you have to cancel your trip due to an unforeseen event, the city tax is not due! But if you have already paid it to a large portal (perhaps with a non-refundable rate), getting that money back will become a bureaucratic nightmare.

Always pay only for the room in advance, but settle local taxes directly at the accommodation. Has it ever happened to you to pay it online and then have to cancel your trip?

Ci sono giorni in cui, lo ammetto, sono decisamente meno allegra del solito.

Dopo tanti anni che faccio questo lavoro, ho la fortuna di avere ospiti fissi che tornano in determinati periodi dell'anno. Quando arrivano, per me è come se iniziasse una festa. Ma quando fanno il check-out e chiudono quella porta per ripartire... mi viene sempre in mente la scena finale del film Sapore di Mare, con il bagnino che chiude gli ombrelloni a fine estate.

Una piccola parte di cuore se ne va via con loro, ed è una sensazione di malinconia assolutamente reciproca.

Questo è il prezzo bellissimo di fare accoglienza mettendoci l'anima. Per fortuna, c'è sempre la curiosità di conoscere i nuovi ospiti in arrivo per colmare quel vuoto e ricominciare da capo.

There are days when, I admit it, I am definitely less cheerful than usual.

After so many years doing this job, I am lucky enough to have regular guests who return at certain times of the year. When they arrive, for me it's like a party is starting. But when they check out and close that door to leave... it always reminds me of the final scene of the Italian movie Sapore di Mare, with the lifeguard closing the beach umbrellas at the end of summer.

A small piece of my heart leaves with them, and it's an absolutely mutual feeling of melancholy.

This is the beautiful price of doing hospitality with your whole soul. Luckily, there is always the curiosity of meeting new arriving guests to fill that void and start all over again.

Avendo un passato come hostess di terra prima di aprire il mio B&B, quando viaggio non riesco a fare a meno di osservare quello che succede ai gate.

Vedo continuamente l'accanimento delle compagnie low cost al momento di misurare i bagagli a mano. Una severità che spesso colpisce solo i ragazzi più giovani, mentre i passeggeri più grandi vengono lasciati passare. A livello personale, non lo trovo per niente giusto.

Per questo sono curiosissima di vedere cosa cambierà davvero con il nuovo regolamento europeo. La proposta, che è ancora in discussione al Consiglio, prevede che il biglietto base di tutte le compagnie (anche le low cost) debba includere un vero bagaglio a mano tipo trolley, e non solo il classico zainetto sotto il sedile.

Sarebbe una bella svolta per chi viaggia per un weekend e vuole farlo senza l'ansia del centimetro all'imbarco. Tu cosa ne pensi? Sarebbe l'ora di cambiare le regole?
Having a background as ground staff before opening my B&B, when I travel I can't help but observe what happens at the gates.

I constantly see the relentless strictness of low-cost airlines when measuring hand luggage. A strictness that often only targets younger people, while older passengers are let through. On a personal level, I don't find it fair at all.

That's why I'm extremely curious to see what will actually change with the new European regulation. The proposal, which is still under discussion at the Council, states that the basic ticket of all airlines (even low-cost ones) must include a real cabin bag like a trolley, and not just the classic under-seat backpack.

It would be a great turning point for those traveling for a weekend who want to do so without the anxiety of measuring every inch at boarding. What do you think? Is it time to change the rules?

Fare accoglienza non significa solo avere delle belle stanze. È un mestiere vero, che non si può improvvisare.

In fuga dal caldo di Roma, ho passato un fine settimana in un casale ristrutturato bellissimo. Esteticamente meraviglioso, ma dal punto di vista dell'ospitalità mancavano totalmente le basi. Letti senza coprimaterasso, un unico sapone in bagno che sembrava detersivo per i piatti e asciugamani così rigidi che sembravano fatti di cartone.

Questo è quello che succede quando si fa questo lavoro con superficialità. Quando preparo le stanze a Maison Flaminio, scelgo la biancheria e curo i dettagli guidata da una sola, semplice regola: tu ci staresti?

Se la risposta non è un "sì" assoluto, significa che non è all'altezza. Il tuo riposo in vacanza merita molta più cura di un asciugamano di cartone.

Hospitality isn't just about having nice rooms. It’s a real profession that cannot be improvised.

Escaping the heat of Rome, I spent a weekend in a beautifully restored farmhouse. Aesthetically wonderful, but from a hospitality point of view, it completely lacked the basics. Beds without mattress covers, a single soap in the bathroom that felt like dish detergent, and towels so stiff they felt like cardboard.

This is what happens when this job is done superficially. When I prepare the rooms at Maison Flaminio, I choose the linens and take care of the details guided by one simple rule: would you stay there?

If the answer isn't an absolute "yes", it means it's not good enough. Your rest on vacation deserves much more care than a cardboard towel.

Qualche settimana fa, tra fine luglio e agosto, al Foro Italico ci sono stati i campionati estivi di nuoto sincronizzato.

Avere la struttura piena di questi ragazzi, tutti tra i 10 e i 12 anni, è stata una boccata d'energia incredibile. Ma la cosa che mi ha emozionato di più è stata vedere la loro reazione quando sono entrati nelle camere: quello stupore genuino e i loro grandi "Wow!" sono stati il regalo più bello che potessi ricevere.

Alla fine, preparare una stanza in modo maniacale e curare i dettagli serve proprio a questo: a far sentire speciale chiunque varchi quella porta, che sia un manager, un turista, o un piccolo campione che si prepara per la gara.

Forza ragazzi, sempre! E tu, ti ricordi l'emozione del tuo primo viaggio sportivo o scolastico?

A few weeks ago, between late July and August, the summer synchronized swimming championships took place at the Foro Italico.

Having the property full of these kids, all between 10 and 12 years old, was an incredible breath of energy. But the thing that moved me the most was seeing their reaction when they walked into the rooms: that genuine amazement and their big "Wows!" were the best gift I could receive.

In the end, obsessively preparing a room and taking care of the details is exactly for this: to make anyone walking through that door feel special, whether it's a manager, a tourist, or a little champion getting ready for a competition.

Accogliere i viaggiatori a Roma è la mia vita, ma ogni tanto sento il bisogno di fare i bagagli e partire anch'io. È il mio lato *wanderlust* che chiama!

Quest'anno niente Oriente, si va dritti verso l'estremo Occidente. Torno in un posto speciale, dove sono già stata vent'anni fa e a cui mi lega un ricordo bellissimo: lì ho visto l'Italia vincere la finale dei Mondiali del 2006... in piena mattina!

Spero che tornare lì mi porti la stessa fortuna.

Avete già capito di che posto si tratta? Vi do solo un indizio: il fuso orario è a -12 ore da Roma. Voglio proprio vedere chi di voi è così bravo in geografia da indovinare nei commenti! 👇

No East this year, we are heading straight to the far West. I’m going back to a special place where I was twenty years ago and to which I have a beautiful memory tied: I watched Italy win the 2006 World Cup final there... right in the middle of the morning!

Se dormi a Roma Nord, la tua serata non finisce dopo il concerto o la partita. Inizia.

A soli 10 minuti di passeggiata tranquilla da Maison Flaminio c'è Ponte Milvio. Dimentica l'idea della solita piazza per turisti: questo è il vero cuore della movida romana. È il posto dove andiamo noi residenti per prenderci un aperitivo, fare una cena che mette d'accordo tutti (dalla cucina tipica fino a scelte più moderne) e goderci una serata in mezzo ai veri romani.

L'atmosfera è sempre viva, perfetta per chi vuole staccare la spina senza doversi infilare nel traffico del centro storico. È la prima dritta che do sempre a chi arriva, e il sorriso con cui rientrano in stanza la sera è la conferma che funziona sempre.

Ci sono cose in una stanza su cui non si può scendere a compromessi. E la biancheria è una di queste.

È una vera e propria fissazione, lo ammetto. Dietro la scelta degli asciugamani perfetti c'è una ricerca infinita che solo chi fa questo mestiere con passione può capire. Ma il principio che mi guida è uno solo: chi viaggia, merita sempre il meglio.

Dalla pensioncina più semplice fino al grand hotel, il momento in cui esci dalla doccia e ti asciughi deve essere una coccola, non un fastidio. Quando entri nelle nostre stanze, voglio che tu percepisca subito questa attenzione, perché il vero riposo passa proprio dai dettagli che non si vedono nelle foto.
