Best Things to Do in Rome at Night
Rome deserves at least one night when you don’t make dinner the final plan.
Once the heat disappears, the monuments light up and the day-trippers leave, the city feels completely different.
Here are some of my favorite ways to experience Rome after dark.
1. Walk Along the Tiber
In summer, this is one of the most enjoyable evening walks in Rome.
The riverbanks come alive with food stands, outdoor bars, music, small events and places where people sit, drink and sometimes dance beside the river.
The stretch around Ponte Sisto, Isola Tiberina and Trastevere is especially good for an evening walk.
2. See the Colosseum After Dark
Even if you visited during the day, go back at night.
The illuminated Colosseum with fewer tour groups around it has a completely different atmosphere.
Walk from Piazza Venezia along Via dei Fori Imperiali toward the Colosseum.
3. Visit Trevi Fountain Late at Night
Trevi can be overwhelming during the day.
Try returning much later in the evening. The fountain illuminated against the surrounding buildings is one of those Rome scenes that looks even better after dark.
4. Walk From the Pantheon to Piazza Navona
This is one of my favorite short night walks.
Start around the Pantheon, wander through the little streets and finish in Piazza Navona.
No itinerary is really necessary. Just walk.
5. Spend an Evening in Trastevere
Come for dinner, but don’t leave immediately afterward.
Walk through the smaller streets, stop for a drink and continue toward Piazza Trilussa and the river.
It gets busy and noisy, but that is part of Trastevere at night.
6. Cross Ponte Sant’Angelo
This might be one of Rome’s most beautiful nighttime views.
Walk across the bridge with Castel Sant’Angelo illuminated in front of you, then continue toward St Peter’s.
7. See St Peter’s Square at Night
During the day it can feel enormous and crowded.
At night, it becomes much calmer.
Standing in the square with the basilica illuminated is a completely different experience from visiting during opening hours.
8. Watch Rome From the Gianicolo
If you still have energy, climb or take transport up to the Janiculum Hill.
The view over Rome’s domes and rooftops after sunset is worth it.
9. Have a Late Gelato Walk
One of the simplest pleasures in Rome.
Get a gelato and walk without a destination.
Centro Storico is made for this — Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de’ Fiori, Trevi and the surrounding streets are close enough to connect on foot.
10. Do Absolutely Nothing
This might sound strange, but some of the best evenings in Rome are the ones you don’t plan.
Find a piazza.
Order something to drink.
Sit outside.
Watch people pass.
Rome is not a city you need to keep sightseeing every minute.
And if you are visiting in summer, save at least one evening for the Tiber.
Walking beside the river with the bridges illuminated, music playing and Rome above you feels very different from the city you explored under the afternoon sun.
