At the beginning of summer, a few friends gathered beneath the roof of Masseria Palaci to welcome the new season.

They shaped the Masseria through their respective practices, bringing its spirit to life from new perspectives.

Among the traces left by those days is this series of floral portraits – a visual trace of something that has since become part of our everyday life here.

Each composition was approached as a subject with its own presence and character: an encounter with the flora as one might encounter a person.

Over the course of 3 days, Clinica Botanica (Clinica Botanica), a gardening and installation practice based in Milan, explored and harvested the local vegetation; Delfino Sisto Legnani (DSL Studio), photographer with an ancestral relation to flora, translated this encounter through his architectural yet sensitive lens.

Surrounding the fields around the Masseria, and scattered across the whole Salento countryside, the “pagghiare”, ancient dry-stone shelters, were built by generations of farmers, without mortar or architects, using only the stone gathered from the surrounding fields.

Their conical, rising forms are at once remarkably simple and ingeniously precise: places to store tools and crops, shelter from the summer heat, and, in their larger forms, even temporary homes for farming families.

More than just a rustic shelter, the pajara is a living fragment of Salento’s rural history, an architecture shaped by necessity, memory and an intimate knowledge of the land.
