🌴 PALMA DE SOLS — A NAME THAT CONNECTS SANT’ANTIOCO TO SPAIN

The name Palma de Sols carries us back to one of the most important turning points in Sardinian history.

🇪🇸 In 1297, Pope Boniface VIII formally granted the Crown of Aragon the right to conquer Sardinia and Corsica. But the actual Aragonese expedition to Sardinia began years later.

⛵ On 9 June 1323, a Catalan-Aragonese fleet commanded by Infante Alfonso, son of King James II of Aragon, sailed from Port Mahon in Menorca towards Sardinia.

And its destination was recorded as Palma de Sols — the island of Sant’Antioco.

From that moment, Sardinia gradually became part of the political world of the Crown of Aragon, and later of the Spanish Monarchy. Catalan and Spanish influence would remain deeply connected with the island for centuries.

📜 This is the historical context in which names such as “Palma de Sols” and forms connected with Palma de Sulcis appear in the sources.

So the connection with Spain is not simply linguistic: Sant’Antioco stood at the very beginning of the Aragonese conquest of Sardinia in 1323.

A small island at the centre of a much larger Mediterranean story. 🌊

Cala Domestica is much more than a beautiful beach. Until 1940, the bay was used to load minerals extracted from the nearby mines onto ships.

Even more surprising: the tunnel in the rock visible near the beach was dug by miners and today leads to a tiny hidden cove called La Caletta. ⛏️🌊

🏺✨ European Heritage Days in Sant’Antioco

On 26 & 27 September, Sant’Antioco opens the doors to more than 3,000 years of history for the European Heritage Days.

For just €1 per site, from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, you can visit some of the island’s most important cultural places: the Punic Necropolis of Sulky, Roman Acropolis, Savoy Fort, Ethnographic Museum, Hypogean Village, Ferruccio Barreca Archaeological Museum and the Tofet.

A perfect reason to discover Sant’Antioco in September — quieter, slower and full of things to experience beyond the beach.
