THE MARBLE VEIL THAT LOOKS LIKE REAL FABRIC

In 1752, Italian sculptor Antonio Corradini created Modesty, an incredible marble sculpture that can still be seen in Naples today.

The woman appears to be covered by a thin, almost transparent veil. But there is no fabric at all, the entire veil is carved from solid marble.

He carefully carved the folds and details so the stone appears to cling to the woman’s face and body like real material.

The sculpture was commissioned by Raimondo di Sangro, Prince of Sansevero, in memory of his mother, Cecilia Gaetani dell’Aquila d’Aragona, who died when he was very young.

More than 270 years later, Modesty remains inside the Sansevero Chapel in Naples, Italy, where visitors can still see it today.
