Lo sapevate che una delle feste patronali più belle al mondo si celebra a Catania!
La città di Catania è situata nel sud-est della Sicilia, sulla costa bagnata dal mar Ionio, a soli venti minuti dal vulcano attivo più alto d'Europa, l'Etna.
Katane fu fondata dai Greci nel 729 a. C., e conquistata dai Romani nel 263 d.C.
Catania fu distrutta nel 1693 da un violento terremoto e subito ricostruita su progetto di G. Lanza, Duca di Camastra, realizzato dall'architetto siciliano G. B. Vaccarini, discepolo del Bernini di Roma. Lo stile del Vaccarini è ancora oggi riconoscibile nel Barocco del centro storico, dichiarato dall'UNESCO Patrimonio dell'Umanità. E proprio Catania la città che ospita la terza più grande festività cristiana al mondo, la festa di Sant’Agata, rappresentazione di devozione davvero unica. Tre giorni di culto, devozione e folclore. Il primo giorno accompagnato dalle Candelore già in giro tra le strade della città qualche settimana prima, vengono portati in dono i ceri chiedendo protezione alla Santuzza. Nella strada principale di Catania vengono portate in corteo anche due Carrozze settecentesche appartenute al senato. La prima giornata di festa si conclude con appunto a “sira o’ tri” atteso spettacolo pirotecnico. All’alba del 4 Febbraio i Devoti vestono il loro sacco bianco, a scurzetta il berretto di velluto e i guanti bianchi e attendono la messa dell’aurora dove finalmente riabbracciano la loro santuzza. Da qui partirà il giro esterno. Che toccherà i luoghi del martirio della Santa. Giorno 5 accompagnata da Garofani Rossi Sant’Agata torna tra la sua gente. Dal tramonto fino all’alba del giorno dopo la santuzza viene portata in giro per la città nel famoso giro interno, che culmina nella famosa salita di San Giuliano. Per poi tornare nella Cattedrale e tornare tra la sua gente il 12 Febbraio giorno della famosa Ottava di Sant’Agata. In questi giorni è possibile anche assaggiare i dolci tipici della Festa. Le famose Olivette, o i cassateddi di Sant’Aita. Tradizione, culto, devozione che fanno di Catania una delle città più bella della nostra Isola.
Da visitare il Castello Ursino, il Duomo, Villa Bellini, il teatro greco-romano, il monastero dei benedettini, Palazzo Biscari, ‘u liotru, la Fontana dell’Amenano e tanto altro. Catania è da vivere, da scoprire.
