Passo dei Salati, at almost 2,980 metres above sea level, lies between Alagna Valsesia in Piedmont and Gressoney in the Aosta Valley, right in the heart of the spectacular Monte Rosa massif.

In summer, Passo dei Salati is a fantastic destination for high-altitude hiking in the Italian Alps. The lifts from Alagna Valsesia make it easy to reach the mountains, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of rugged peaks, glaciers and deep alpine valleys. And if you are lucky, you may even spot an Alpine ibex along the way.

In winter, the landscape is completely transformed. Passo dei Salati becomes an important part of the Monterosa Ski area, connecting Alagna Valsesia with Gressoney. Expect long ski runs, impressive altitude differences and unforgettable views across the snow-covered Alps.

🥾 A spectacular hike in Alagna Valsesia

Hiking in Alagna Valsesia means impressive mountain scenery and plenty of variety. This is one of those hikes where the landscape seems to change around every corner. From forest trails and rushing mountain streams to huge waterfalls, alpine meadows and dramatic rock faces.

We started in Wold, where we took the shuttle bus to Cascata dell’Acqua Bianca. From here, we followed hiking trail 207A and immediately started climbing.

As we gained altitude, the landscape became increasingly impressive. We passed Alpe Mittlentail, walked alongside powerful waterfalls and mountain streams, and found ourselves surrounded by the rugged scenery of the Monte Rosa area. Along the way, we even passed a small alpine lake and a herd of cows grazing high in the mountains.

At Alpe Testanera, we stopped for lunch at a picnic table before continuing uphill to Rifugio Barba Ferrero at 2,247 metres. After the climb, stopping here for a drink surrounded by the mountains was definitely well deserved!

From Rifugio Barba Ferrero, we started our descent. The return route takes you past Alpe Blatte and the Giardino Botanico and reveals yet another side of the landscape. Rocky mountain paths gradually give way to alpine vegetation, mountain streams and green forest trails.

With around 860 metres of elevation gain, this is a challenging hike, but absolutely worth the effort. The combination of waterfalls, impressive rock formations, alpine scenery and constantly changing nature makes this a fantastic hiking route in Alagna Valsesia.
