🪴 Le vere da pozzo sono strutture abbastanza comuni a Venezia: le si può trovare nei principali campi ed in corti private, come nel caso del nostro palazzo. Molto spesso sono istoriate e decorate e sono solo la parte superiore di una cisterna sottostante, che raccoglieva l’acqua piovana.

La vera da pozzo di Ca’ Foscolo ha su tre lati bassorilievi raffiguranti arcieri con elmo, arco e scudo, e sui quattro spigoli decorazioni a foglie grasse. Può essere datata a metà del Quattrocento, lo si deduce da alcuni dettagli: lo scudo con una tacca degli arcieri, tipico di quell’epoca, l’elmo - la celata alla veneziana -, che proteggeva l’intero volto lasciando aperta solo una fessura rettangolare per gli occhi, e il cercine, un cordone a torciglione in vita dell’arciere, sul quale poggiava l’elmo.

Come in questo caso, spesso sulle vere da pozzo di questo periodo la cornice in alto è decorata con il motivo a torciglione (ancora tipicamente gotico), insieme a quello sottostante a punte di diamante, motivo che prelude già al Rinascimento.

Wellheads are quite common structures in Venice: they can be found in the main squares and in private courtyards, as is the case with our building. They are often decorated with historical scenes and are only the upper part of an underlying cistern, which collected rainwater.

🏹 The wellhead of Ca’ Foscolo has bas-reliefs on three sides depicting archers with helmets, bows and shields, and decorations with succulent leaves on the four corners. It can be dated to the mid-15th century, as can be deduced from certain details: the shield with an archer’s notch, typical of that period, the helmet - the Venetian-style celata - which protected the entire face, leaving only a rectangular slit for the eyes, and the cercine, a twisted cord around the archer’s waist, on which the helmet rested.

As in this case, the upper frame of wellheads from this period is often decorated with a twisted cord motif (still typically Gothic), together with a diamond-point motif below, which already heralds the Renaissance.
