The Peggy Guggenheim Collection is among the most important museums in Italy for European and American art of the first half of the 20th century. It is located in Peggy Guggenheim's former home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal in Venice. The core mission of the museum is to present the personal collection of Peggy Guggenheim herself. The collection holds major works of Cubism, Futurism, Metaphysical painting, European abstraction, avant-garde sculpture, Surrealism, and American Abstract Expressionism, by some of the greatest artists of the 20th century but also masterpieces from the Hannelore B. and Rudolph B. Schulhof Collection, the Nasher Sculpture Garden, as well as temporary exhibitions.

The Peggy Guggenheim Collection has devised the Kids Day Sunday workshop programme to bring children between ages 4 and 10 closer to modern and contemporary art, helping them understand the subjects and the creative techniques of the exhibited works through practical experimentation.

The 48th International Theatre Festival is titled Nascondi(no) (Hide-and-seek) and features 28 titles (all world premieres) and 40 performances.

Conceived as an “Italian Theatre Pavilion”, the 48th International Theatre Festival organized by Director Antonio Latella is a collective exhibition of Italian artists on stage from September 14th to 24th in Venice, with 28 titles for 40 performances, all world premieres, addressing a single theme, censorship.

The Lions for Theatre this year seek to reward “artists who give and do so much for theatre – explains Latella – but often remain in the background, in part because of the director, sometimes too controlling, who forgets that the final outcome is often dependent on the collaborators he chooses”.

The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement has been awarded to Franco Visioli, the sound designer who worked with Thierry Salmon, Peter Stein and above all Massimo Castri, before collaborating with Latella. “His dramaturgies are actual scripts on top of the written plays, creating synergic relationships that enhance the fundamental steps by the author and director” (from the motivation).

The Silver Lion has been awarded to Alessio Maria Romano, the director and choreographer who has worked on the stage movement for productions by Luca Ronconi, Carmelo Rifici, Valter Malosti and Sonia Bergamasco, among others, in addition to his commitment to the pedagogy of movement, to train actors by «teaching the actors what they need to know, especially the new figure of the actor-performer, awareness of their own body, and how a gesture in theatre can be more incisive than a spoken line” (from the motivation).

Migrating Objects:
Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Peggy Guggenheim Collection

Peggy Guggenheim is celebrated for her groundbreaking European and American modern art collection. Migrating Objects: Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas in the Peggy Guggenheim Collection focuses on a lesser-known, but crucial episode in Guggenheim’s collecting: her turn in the 1950s and ’60s to works created by artists in Africa, Oceania, and the indigenous Americas.

The exhibition represents a remarkable occasion to view 35 rarely seen non-Western artworks Guggenheim collected, shown at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection as a cohesive whole for the first time. This exhibition presents Guggenheim’s African, Oceanic, and indigenous Americas objects in groupings privileging their original contexts or, alternately, in dialogue with European works from her collection by avant-garde artists who appropriated ideas from cultures beyond Europe’s borders. These opposing modes of display enable an exploration of the flawed narratives that Western culture imposed on objects of this kind.

Free tours of the exhibition are offered daily at 3:30pm (museum ticket purchase required).

The event will be inaugurated with the parade of the twelve girls selected in the previous weeks.

Aperol presents… the 2020 Flight of the Angel!

The “Flight of the Angel” is a traditional event that goes back to the Serenissima period where an unknown guest of Venice, flying along a rope from San Marco bell tower to the middle of the square, will offer an homage to the Doge, and will be greeted by the crowded parterre of the period costumes parades of the Historical Re-enactments.
As a conclusion, the embrace of the Angel and the Doge will smooth the atmosphere of a square galvanized by scenographical effects always appreciated by the Italian and international networks. The girl winner of the 2019 edition of the “Festa delle Marie” (Marie contest), Linda Pani, will be the Angel of the new Carnival 2020.

The “Doge” Parade is organized by C.E.R.S. – Consortium of European Re-enactment Societies, with the participation of Ass. Amici del Carnevale di Venezia, Ass. Internazionale per il Carnevale di Venezia and Ass. Dame e Cavalieri.

Thanks to a long-term deposit (from 9 February 2019) a nucleus of artworks by some among the major masters from the Italian 1900s is taking its place within the already prestigious permanent collection. It features thirty-two works, from a private collection, signed by Massimo Campigli, Carlo Carrà, Giacomo Manzù, Ottone Rosai, Scipione and Mario Sironi, created between the Twenties and the Fifties, displayed at an exhibition by curator Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti in 1953 at Palazzo Strozzi.
This same collection was to be exhibited later on at the showcase which inaugurated the Modern Art Gallery in Turin in 1959 and on a tour in American, European and Japanese museums.

INFORMATION

15/01/2020

Until 1st March.

Set in a suggestive display between ancient and modern, weaving through history, myth and fine jewellery, this exhibition presents a circuit on the serpent theme with magnificent creations by the famed maison: from its first stylised models made with the Tubogas technique, to more realistic ones with scales in gold or coated with multi-coloured enamels.

This precious layout is completed by images shot by great photographers featuring muses from the worlds of cinema and of fashion, wearing these creations born in the 1940s with supple watch-bracelets, which soon became icons of bold creativity.
