Did you know that during the time of the Repubblica di Venezia New Year’s Day was celebrated on 1st March, not 1st January? ⠀

The tradition comes from the ancient Roman calendar, which marked the beginning of the year with the awakening of nature. The festival, known as “Bati Marso,” saw Venetians walking through the streets banging pots and pans to drive away winter and invoke Mars, the god associated with the month of March and a symbol of rebirth. ⠀

After the conquest of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1797, the Gregorian calendar was adopted, but even today in Veneto on 1st March people still wish each other “Bon cao de ano.”⠀
