After a long and successful journey as one of Jamaica’s premier eco and nature resorts, it is with great sadness, to inform you, that Greencastle Estate Hotel and lodgings will be closing from the 22nd September 2022 due to the Estate having been sold and its current owners retiring.

We would like to thank everyone for their support over the last few years and particularly the birding community and birding companies worldwide who chose Greencastle for their group tours and accommodation. However, it is possible the hotel may reopen next year, but this will become clearer when the new owners have formulated their future plans.

Here’s are some more fantastic pics taken by photographer, Kevin Berkoff, of the beautiful Northern Potoo on his earlier birding tour in March of this year. We’ve included an image he didn’t take - of our Potoo suite, named after this beautiful bird. In addition to migratories such as the Northern Potoo, it’s possible to see all 28 endemics on a birding tour at Green Castle when combined with a couple of day trips to the Blue and John Crow Mountains.

Blessed with many waterfalls within Green Castle's own 1600 acre private estate, Kwame Falls is located just outside of it. It's a popular hike for guests staying at Green Castle. There are various routes to get there (five-hour return trek on foot or two hours by boat), however one of the most popular is to go through Robin’s Bay and take in picturesque sights such as the rocky black sand beach. One of the most romantic things to do when on vacation in Jamaica, is to go rafting down the Rio Grande or Martha Brae rivers. Rafting was made popular by Hollywood movie star and former resident of Jamaica, Errol Flynn, in the 1950s. The famous Jamaican activity involves rafts made of bamboo and transport typically two people down the streams of Jamaica’s popular rivers. The rafts are operated by licensed and experienced raft captains. Rafting is done along the Martha Brae River in Falmouth or the Rio Grande River in Portland. Green Castle Estate Jamaica

Green Castle Estate has a vibrant and fascinating history. Evidence of Green Castle’s past can be experienced in surprising places all over the Estate. Visitors can step inside our historic windmill tower built in the 1600’s, or find shards of pottery on Davey Hill from the original Green Castle inhabitants, the Taino Indians around 900AD. The landscape is inspiring, and as you sit on the Estate House veranda looking out to sea, you can imagine tall ships coming into Jacks Bay to collect sugar, rum, cocoa and bananas to take back to European markets. No doubt bloody battles ensued between the Spanish and the British or the Pirates.Take a walk on the natural eco beach and you will see pieces of brick and English coal dropped on the natural eco beach when it was a busy port during Green Castle’s plantation days.

Green Castle’s rich Jamaican heritage is helping us to define its future. Green Castle is deliberately building a long term plan for sustainable tourism and agriculture that integrates the local community and local business partners. All Green Castle stakeholders are working toward financially viable and environmentally friendly tourism and land uses that are sustainable and in harmony with the diverse eco-systems that make Green Castle the special place that it is.

Green Castle Estate is a historic and remarkably beautiful 1600 acre property located on the north coast of Jamaica. The property has a network of community and business stakeholders that work together to make the estate and the area successful. The owners unique approach at Green Castle is to focus on tourism, while developing entrepreneurial opportunities for local businesses such as GC Orchids, Green Castle Organic, Jacks Bay Beach, Vince Edwards Apiary, Sala’s Lawn Restaurant and bar and Eastern Livestock Development Association.
