Community-owned sustainable tourism in Dana Nature Reserve
Wadi Dana Eco-camp is a joint venture between a group of local farmers and the Dana Cooperative. The camp provides employment and work experience opportunities for local people, and profits go back to the local community.
About 1 km from the ottoman village of Dana in southern Jordan, the camp is set in a stunning mountain location overlooking Wadi Dana, Dana Nature Reserve and Dana village. It is the perfect hideaway for hikers and lovers of nature.
The camp is working towards eco-status, and has been created in a way that is sensitive to the natural environment and local heritage. This has allowed the land to remain within the families that have owned and protected it for centuries. There are 4 twin rooms (en-suites), 2 triple rooms (en-suites), and 15 tents that sleep one or two persons (shared shower and toilet facilities). 3 of the tents have concrete walls and fabric roofs, the other tents are in the traditional style (Bait Al-Shar). Each tent has mattresses, blankets/duvets and pillows. The tents and rooms are furnished simply, but comfortably, and have views down through Dana village’s orchards and across to Wadi Dana. Breakfast is included in the tariff and a dinner of traditional Bedouin food is available to book. Lunch boxes are also bookable. The camp atmosphere is peaceful to allow guests to listen to nature. There is a large meeting tent for relaxation and socialising and an indoor dining area, both with uninterrupted views across to Wadi Dana. In the evenings the camp is lit by lamplight and candlelight. Guests can choose to spend time in the main tent relaxing and socialising, or they may prefer to spend their time star-gazing. The camp is ‘off grid’ so there is no mains electricity at the camp. Limited solar power is available in rooms, tents, bathrooms, restaurant, stairs and passages, but not in the meeting tent (majlis). Bring a torch, forget about portable technology, and relax and experience the centuries-old lifestyle and homeland of Dana’s Bedouins! OTHER SERVICES include - friendly and knowledgeable local staff who speak Arabic and English; local guides and hiking (additional cost); half-day village life experiences (additional cost); transfers to and from any location in Jordan, including airport transfers (additional cost).
